Book Description

25 Sep 2005
When retired surgeon James Priest was diagnosed with prostate cancer, he documented his experiences in a daily journal. Dr Priest learned that, although urologists often recommend surgical removal of the prostate, other treatments can be effective - but with less risk of such life-changing complications as impotence and incontinence. In addition to Dr. Priest's informative journal, this book contains twenty concise articles on important aspects of prostate cancer, written expressly for the layperson: What is the Prostate Gland? What is a PSA Test? Needle Biopsy of the Prostate Gland; What is a Gleason Score? What is Cancer? Dealing with the Diagnosis; Roles of Physicians and Patients in Treating Prostate Cancer; Prostate Cancer: A Bewildering Disease; How Does Radiation Therapy Work? Brachytherapy (Radioactive Seeds) for Prostate Cancer; Radical Prostatectomy: Surgical Removal of the Prostate; Hormonal Treatment for Prostate Cancer; Cryotherapy (Freezing) for Prostate Cancer; What is Watchful Waiting? If Treatment Fails - What Next? Living with Prostate Cancer; Erectile Dysfunction (Impotence) Following Prostate Treatment; What Do Tomatoes, Vitamin E, and Oily Fish Have in Common? Complementary and Alternative Treatments; and Emerging Technologies for Treating Prostate Cancer.

3.0 out of 5 stars Needs updating 28 Mar 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Throughout this book the author is proclaiming the advantages of radiotherapy over surgery. It does not become apparent until over half way through that he is talking about an older form of surgery. Many surgeons today offer 'keyhole' robotic surgery which is supposed to have fewer and less severe complications than those railed against in this book. Although it is quite a good read the information needs to be brought up to date. It is possible you may still reach the same conclusions as those presented in this book but as always with prostate cancer one should do one's research and look at the most up to date treatments and also what is available in your area.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended book 9 Oct 2005
By Donald Lathrop - Published on Amazon.com
I really, really liked this book! The writing style is so easy to read and to follow the author's lines of reasoning. I'm now convinced to favor radiation over surgery, although I hope I never have to make the decision. I've already recommended this book to a friend who is facing the problem right now. The summaries of the medical information, anatomy, physiology, etc. are very clear. The journal of the author's thoughts, emotions, and side effects he experienced during his treatment were so interesting--more so because they were personal. Congratulations on a great achievement. I hope it sells well. It certainly deserves widespread distribution.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read If Treatment Option is Radiation 24 Aug 2006
By Zman - Published on Amazon.com
This is the fourth book I've read on prostate cancer and easily the most upbeat and practical for a prostate cancer victim who has the option of choosing radiation treatment, specifically 3D Conformal Radiation. Dr. Priest is an excellent writer who takes you through the day to day process of getting 3D conformal radiation treatment, which is a two month process. What he describes is the reality of going to the hospital every single day for two months and dealing with the minor episodes that occur. Although the process is not without its problems, they are far less than a typical surgery patient goes through. As Dr. Priest explains, doctors know better than anybody all of the problems that can occur with any major surgery - and prostate cancer surgery is major with the potential for some serious side affects. Radiation therapy is not a walk in the park but it is far less threatening than surgery. The day to day diary approach Dr. Priest takes makes for some very easy reading. The processes that he describes, including the drinking to of water before each and every treatment are exactly what I was told my my radiation oncologist. I haven't started my treatments yet, but this book did a lot to ease my fears. Intertwined in the diary are sidebars covering some of the prostate cancer technical issues which seem to be up-to-date. If you are considering radiation treatment using 3d conformal radiation, this book is a must read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beating Prostate Cancer without Surgery 11 Mar 2006
By Philip Evans - Published on Amazon.com
This is not just another medical book of complicated facts and terminologies.

Instead, this is a clearly written book of personal experiences which the author, Dr Priest, leads the reader with great care so as to clarify the process of dealing with prostate cancer. Dr Priest explains typical human feelings that are common during a period of fear, uncertainty and indecision. This is a journal which follows his own ordeal through his medical care comparing all modern day procedures which are now available to deal with prostate cancer.

The book is easy to read and certainly captured "this" readers' attention from page one till the very last. It opened my eyes to information that I previously found confusing.

I read it once and I will no doubt read it again and again. This is a great reference book that every man and woman should read and keep.

Thank you, Dr. Priest, for such up to date and concise information and putting it all together in a clear and readable form.

5.0 out of 5 stars Recommended reading for anyone having to deal with the onset of prostate cancer 3 Feb 2006
By Midwest Book Review - Published on Amazon.com
Beating Prostate Cancer Without Surgery: Proven Options From A Doctor And Cancer Survivor by retired physician James D. Priest is drawn from a personal journal that he began when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Dr. Priest learned that although urologists typically recommend surgical removal of the prostate in such cases, there are other and alternate treatments that can be as effective as surgery but with less risk of such life-changing complications as impotence and incontinence. In addition to Dr. Priest's own compelling journal entries, Beating Prostate Cancer Without Surgery features twenty brief articles on important aspects of prostate cancer, as well as a foreword by Archbishop Dessmond Tutu, who is himself a prostate cancer survivor. Beating Prostate Cancer Without Surgery is especially recommended reading for anyone having to deal with the onset of prostate cancer.

4.0 out of 5 stars "a deft and personal study" 6 Nov 2005
By Dr. Phil - Published on Amazon.com
Dr. James Priest has written an erudite and accessible book on dealing with prostate cancer. In diary form, this gifted writer provides a useful exposition of the current "state of the art" of diagnosis, treatment and outcome, that should be invaluable for patients, their families and friends. Dr. Priest tells the dramatic and intimate personal story of his own struggle with learning of the diagnosis, and dealing with the bewildering information and advice acquired, as he obtained multiple consultations with specialists, discussed the various options with family, and similarly afflicted friends or colleagues, and conducted his own research by reviewing the available medical literature.

Although Dr. Priest selects the most advanced technique of radiation therapy, a thorough and unbiased review of all one needs to know about surgical treatment results is also included. This book will be a source of essential information and substantial comfort to all those with a particular interest in prostate cancer or a general concern about the dilemmas faced by cancer patients in today's world of modern medicine.

I highly recommend this book.
