This well thought out, easy to read book has been my constant guide and companion since I chose recovery from anorexia three years ago. I then picked it up again when I unfortunately developed bulimia earlier this year due to stress at work. It covers all types of eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, compulsive exercise, compulsive eating and the "non specific" ones where you have symptoms of a few but don't fit right into one category.
Because it's written by a recovered anorexic who has been through all types of recovery strategies (inpatient and outpatient) iIfound it much easier to engage with than so many other books written by professionals, or many of the autobiographical books that just talk about one person's experience. The author includes examples from her own journey, such as extracts from her own recovery diary, which helped me feel more 'normal' as a sufferer and that was a key part of my ability to recover. There is advice on things I had never even considered, as well as therapy exercises, recipes, sample diets, coping stategies and advice on breaking harmful behaviours.
Most importantly a large section of the book is about dealing with setbacks and life after you're well into recovery. I found this comforting and encouraging, and I still refer to it now from time to time.
I can't speak highly enough of this book. If you think you need help, this is a very good to start. It's especially good if like me you are one of those who doesn't quite fit into one category or another, isn't too physically ill and therefore doesn't qualify for much specialist NHS help, and cant afford private treatment.
