Product Description

Product Description

Grandmaster John Emms presents a repertoire for White after 1 e4 e5, based on the Italian Game and the Bishop's Opening. The lines he recommends are built upon a sound yet aggressive system of development which can be deployed against virtually every Black defence. The emphasis is firmly on understanding and executing key positional and tactical ideas, rather than the arduous process of memorizing theory. Emms covers both the main variations and the tricky sidelines, and highlights crucial move-order subtleties. This book provides everything you need to know about playing the Italian Game and the Bishop's Opening. It is a Grandmaster's repertoire after 1 e4 e5. It is packed with new ideas and analysis. It is ideal for improvers, club players and tournament players.

I agree completely with the comments of the previous reviewer, but would like to add some additional comments that may hopefully prove useful.

The book focuses on the slow version of the Italian game (the Giuoco Pianissimo) where white puts pawns on d3 and c3 and re-routes the c4 bishop to c2 via b3. This variation has been used a lot recently by Tiviakov and several of his games are included here. In essence it plays very similarly to an early d3 version of the Ruy Lopez (and there are some transpositions), but with less theory.

Both the variation with early kingside castling and the one without are offered as alternatives, so there is a choice of mainline depending on how bloodthirsty you are feeling.

The emphasis of the book is on understanding and the prose is plentiful and well written with the ideas and plans behind the moves really well explained. Having said that, as this is not a terribly theoretical opening I doubt anything of importance has been missed.

Superb 26 July 2010
Format:Paperback
This book offers white a repertoire against e5 based on the Italian game, or as i prefer to call it the Giuoco piano, and the Bishop's opening. This book has given me not only a wealth of new ideas and inspiration, but also a new perspective on and a respect for the Italian game. As Emm's succintly puts it in his forward - For years the italian game has been seen as a "simple" opening that novices learn before moving on to "better" openings. The Italian game is simple because novices play it simply. At higher levels it is antything but simple(paraphrase). Traditionally the Italian game is thought of by many as to not offer white ANY advantages over black. Emm's not only refutes this but also says that often when white has "only level chances it does not matter. This is a statement I totally agree with. If both players have level chances it leads to an exciting game where the player who plays best wins.
Emm's gives the Bishop's opening, primarily, as a way to avoid both the Petroff and guarantee that the gmae is steered towards an Italian game.
Quality Chess Publishing's superb free electronic updates for their books has obviously started to rub off on other publishing houses as within 12 months 2 free updates are available for this book on Evryman's website.
A well-written, enlightening read. Buy it!!!!!
