Product Description

CD Description

This is the second album from Brighton-based alt. country punks Brakes. Lead singer Eamon Hamilton, who also plays guitar in British Sea Power, is joined here by members of Electric Soft Parade. The band certainly deserve to be judged on merit - rather than as a mere side project - as they display an irresistible blend of shimmering guitar pop, country twangs and thrashy punk. The single 'On Your Side' is included.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fab Album, 11 Nov 2006
By Mr. K. A. Dudley "Karl Dudley" (Stoke-on-Trent, UK) - See all my reviews

This is a fabulous album. Clocking in at a lean 28 minutes it's also one of the shortest albums you'll have the pleasure of hearing. And from start to finish it's a hoot. Each of the songs are short and punky and will instantly make you smile. My current favourite is the title track Beatific Visions but they're all good to be honest.

Not a lot more to say really. This album is a resounding success in my opinion. If you an want exciting, cool and fun album that is quintessentially British then look no further.

5.0 out of 5 stars Attitude with a sense of humour, 6 Jul 2007

I first clocked these guys at a cold and windswept 'summer' festival venue where they cheered me up and got my blood re-circulating. I think they're reminicent of the clash with vocals not unlike REM's Stipe. Not many bands could pull off a track lasting less than five seconds - sounds a stupid idea I know - but it works for them. Cease and desist, my favourite, is a masterful tune among a great selection. This band has that rare quality of attitude with a sense of humour.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brakes continue to deliver, 18 April 2007
By T. G. Cox "dancin_terry" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This album is almost impossible to review. It moves at a pace that sees only 2 or it's 11 songs clock in at more than 2 minutes - and it twists and turns from rock-a-billy punk to quiet singer-songwriter staples and Sebadoh style pop moments. Whatever happens in Eamon Hamilton's head - it's definitely a busy place and when he's screaming over "Hold me in the River" or "Do the Funky Chicken" you don't beleiove it's the same vocal chords that produce the melodies of "Beatific Visions". You like this if you are a fan of bands like Guided by Voices or They Might be Giants - ie appreciate good song writing without any boundaries of genre - and I can see the Brakes creating a similar back catalog for future generations to spend eternity exploring.
