Most books dealing with depression spend a lot of time describing the medical science behind this illness and reading through all this information can be depressing in itself. "Beat Depression and Reclaim Your Life", however, cuts through all extraoneous details and gets to the very heart of how it really feels to be depressed. The author knows this because she has been there herself and, as a result, her book has an empathetic truth that no other book I've read on the subject has ever come close to achieving.

Through day-to-day tasks and the 14-day Plan she guides the reader through every stage of recovery, explaining fully the different feelings you may experience at each stage. She covers every angle, from how your food affects your mood to releasing built-up anger. By following the steps in this book, you can learn how to take back control of your emotions and consequently "reclaim your life".

I truly believe that everyone should read this book, not only those suffering from depression but "normal" people as well. It explains so much about how the human psyche works that any reader would ultimately benefit from it, hopefully achieving a heightened understanding and tolerance of other people's emotions.

My life is better for having read this and there are not many books that I could say that about.

Outstanding Book 30 Sep 2005
By R Laine
Format:Paperback
Finally someone who really knows what she is talking about. Alexandra Massey understands what it's like to be depressed and offers brilliant solutions to recover from it in her outstanding book. This book has been incredibly helpful to me, particularly the chapter on confronting the authority which has helped me to "slay my demons", and I would highly recommend this book to anyone who suffers from depression as I have certainly found it to be the most helpful book on the market.

Alexandra Massey has a great depth of knowledge about the pains of depression, and her book day, by day, helps you to address it and find your road to recovery. The book is written in an easy to follow pattern, which clearly makes sense because when you are feeling that low, it is difficult to concentrate on anything too heavy.
The idea of writing a journal on day one of your road to happiness is brilliant because even by day two, three, etc....you can reflect back and read just how you were feeling on that first day..or within the first few days..and you really do see an improvement, no matter how big or small, but you know you have taken a step forward.
I have learnt to distinguish between the child, adult and parent in me, and i now can recognise the symptons of my behaviour by just taking a second to establish which 'head' i am wearing at that time, and what i need to tell myself in order to keep focused on my feelings.
This is a brilliant book, and i am so looking forward to reading Alexandra Massey's new book, Super Foods to Boost your Mood, which combines foods with emotions and will keep my motivation riding high. Thank you for helping me get here.

Reasonable
Just as average as most self help books, but, worth a read if you are suffering from the "black butterfly".
