This lovely music is unlike much that comes out of the African continent, in that it is often restrained, gentle, mellow. This is perhaps Geoffrey Oryema`s finest record, if only due to the opening song, The River - like a musical evocation of a river, all rippling guitars & swirling, ceaseless rhythm, with Oryema`s softly rich voice anchoring it all - and the wonderful closing track, Nomad, a heartrendingly sad plea, as the singer asks `Do not hide your face from me...` then turns, perhaps, his face back to the world where `I feel like a nomad`. There are several uptempo tracks too, but it is these, and other, ballads which make Beat The Border so hauntingly unforgettable.
Geoffrey Oryema, melancholy Ugandan exile, making beautiful music from the tragedy and heartbreak of a troubled land.
