I was "sick and tired of waking up sick and tired" (to quote Mr. Waylon Jennings) ... and just wanted to stop this extremely unhealthy and anti-social cycle. I picked up this book because it appeared to be written in a style I would enjoy.

I kept drinking even after reading the book, but it weighed on my mind and was working away behind the scenes for a couple of months. One day, about two months ago, I said this is it... i want to choose the health benefits of sobriety. I want to get my energy back. I think the book served as a strong marker on my path to finally making that choice. So maybe it will for you as well.

I am now aware of how very very very lucky I am that I apparently am not addicted to alcohol. I simply had developed extremely bad habits over the years. In fact I strongly related to Helen's background. and because, thank god, i didn't have the body addiction to deal with, which means you can't just quit without medical guidance, I was able to just stop my drinking.

The book laid out the very clear picture of the benefits of NOT drinking. From health and social aspects - to the costs, both moneywise and time that it steals from your life.

For those who have developed bad habits, and have had the quantity of alcohol intake increase year after year, or have become anti-social with this bad habit - I think you will find this book a good accelerator for getting onto the road to good health.

For those who must strive to stop and deal with the addiction, I imagine this book would be a great gift to receive, or a 'first' book on the path of reading many others. It has great lists of UK resources, with explanations of what they provide.

As a nutritionist, this is the first book I would refer people to. It's non-judgemental, extremely well researched, and tells the reader exactly what the options for reducing their alcohol (or giving up) are, where to go, how much it will cost and so on. No other book I've read does that - and if you live in the UK that is especially valuable. It draws on interviews with the UK's leading addiction specialists and looks at the latest research on ways to counter drinking too much. All very exciting!

Deciding to take action on your drinking is a massive step.

Knowing the options to that are available and the steps involved is essential - that is what you get here.

Just don't expect faddy, quick fix solutions - like Carr - this is a roadmap for recovery, which is well written and reassuring.

This is a candid book, full of personal insights that I found very enlightening. It's easy to read and has left me with a much better understanding of addiction.

I don't think it sets out to solve absolutely everything, but it's non-judgemental, practical approach is hugely encouraging and has helped me feel more confident in my understanding of the issue. I also found the clear guidance on where to go for further help very useful.

As a result, I feel much better equipped to understand and help a friend who has a problem, which was the main reason for buying this book. But it's also helped me to think a bit more about my relationship with alcohol too. If you're anything like me, you probably know you should cut back on drink but don't really want to. Well, this book gave me the added incentive to try to do so. What's great is that it helps you see how you can take control in a way that will work for you.

It's also shown me that self-help books really can make a difference. I think most people would get something positive out of Beat the Booze. And that's why I've bothered to write this review, my first on amazon.
