Product Description

Welcome to Burden Hill-a picturesque little town adorned with white picket fences and green, green grass, home to a unique team of paranormal investigators. Beneath this shiny exterior, Burden Hill harbors dark and sinister secrets, and it's up to a heroic gang of dogs-and one cat-to protect the town from the evil forces at work. These are the Beasts of Burden Hill-Pugs, Ace, Jack, Whitey, Red and the Orphan-whose early experiences with the paranormal (including a haunted doghouse, a witches' coven, and a pack of canine zombies) have led them to become members of the Wise Dog Society, official animal agents sworn to protect their town from evil. This turns out to be no easy task, as they soon encounter demonic cannibal frogs, tortured spirits, a secret rat society, and a bizarre and deadly resurrection in the Burden Hill cemetery-events which lead to fear and heartbreak as our four-legged heroes discover that the evil within Burden Hill is growing and on the move. Can our heroes overcome these supernatural menaces? Can evil be bested by a paranormal team that doesn't have hands? And even more importantly, will Pugs ever shut the hell up?

Beasts of Burden 11 July 2010
Format:Hardcover
To say Beasts of Burden is merely about a group of animals who confront the supernatural is like saying Animal Farm is merely a story of farm animals who get fed up with the farmer and take over. The plot and circumstances are engaging but the observations on loyalty, honor and the invisible covenant between us and our animal companions really drives this book. Like the show LOST, the mysteries surrounding the bizarre happens in Burden Hill are intriguing but the evolution of the characters is more rewarding. I was surprised by how much of an emotional impact these stories had on me. The stories contain a generous helping of humor and adventure but a sincere dose of tenderness as well. More than once, these stories ask you to look at your own friendships and your relationship with animals. I want to say more - to delve into the actual plots - but to do so would spoil the surprises and probably dishonor the craftmanship of the stories. The horror isn't sanitized but it isn't glamorized either. Terrible things happen in this book in much the same way that the classic fairy tales are really quite gruesome stories. Most of the worst happens off panel but the aftermath and consequences are clear. I hesitate to claim this book is ALL-AGES but the lessons to be learned are very powerful. This book should appeal to teenagers and adults like. Younger children may need a parent to explain some of the events and their results. The watercolor art by Jill Thompson is wonderful and lush. Overall, Beasts of Burden is one of the best graphic novels to be published this year and one that will be a rewarding read for many years to come. Thank to Evan Dorkin, Jill Thompson and Dark Horse for publishing this book.

If there was one downside to this book, it was that it left me unsatisfied. Purely because I just couldn't get enough. Hopefully the series will continue and there'll be another beautiful hardcover collection out without too much of a wait. The tales are both dark and humorous, gorgeous to look at and overall deeply moving. I'd advise this to anyone with a love of both the occult and pets - whether they read comic books or not. A must buy.

You'll like this a lot.

In a rural community only a miscellaneous collection of pet dogs and a one cat stand against the Forces of Darkness. If Stephen King wrote a graphic novel about talking animals, this is the sort of thing he might have come up with but as he hasn't, it's been up to Evan Dorkin who does a good job on it. Make no mistake, this isn't a coy piece of work and, while there is humour, it's played completely straight. There are ghosts, witches, zombies, werewolves, and worse and artist Thompson doesn't shy away from graphic violence. This is not for kids, at least I'd be extremely careful about putting it in the hands of under-10s.

Jill Thompson's artwork isn't to all tastes and I'm a bit ambivalent towards it so I'd advise checking it out before buying. Overall, however, this is a strong attractive and gruesomely fun package for anyone who loves dogs, cats...and that's where we came in. I'll certainly be back for any future volumes.
