Product Description

Review

'The forgotten bears of English history are imagined in eight intriguing and sophisticated stories offset by a series of brooding and evocative illustrations.' --Sunday Times

Review

"Another eccentric delight from the author of The Underground Man and Ten Sorry Tales, with illustrations from David Roberts. 'There is no category of bear whose story makes for more depressing reading, and whose miserable existence heaps more shame on humanity than that which follows...' 'Completely twisted - utterly enchanting.' Sunday Times on Ten Sorry Tales"

Format:Hardcover
This is a beautifully-written and touching book, each story leading towards its own conclusion without a wasted word or paragraph, while at the same time adding a thread to the whole, so that the ending is at once heartbreaking and heartwarming. My friend Queenie bought it for me for Christmas with her usual skill and deftness at choosing gifts, and I cherished every moment on the train, in bed, on the loo as the book rarely left my side. Ignore Misery Guts (the other reviewer) who seems to believe that a meal must have three courses with Yorkshires, two kinds of taters and custard with the pudding to satisfy. This is not the case - small and tasty wins the day, this book will satisfy without bloating. And he can't spell 'eighth' either.

Format:Hardcover
Tales from a strange and fascinating world of imagination, and an under-world of ignorance, fears and dreams.
But with a glorious hopeful ending.

A book not to be missed. Although I do think that his best work is The Underground Man

Adult fairy tales 14 Nov 2011
Format:Hardcover
Firstly this book contains beautiful illustrations. Secondly the plot, construction and stunningly subtle writing style creates a memorable set of fables for every adult that still enjoys a bit of magic in their fiction.
