Product Description

Product Description

'A Beard In Nepal 2. Return to the Village'  is the story of Fiona and Tod's second visit to the village of Salle, high in the Himalayas of Nepal. They returned to take presents and supplies to the villagers.

The story of their first visit to the village is told in the bestselling  'A Beard In Nepal'.

This second book is again full of humour as the couple from Liverpool trek with Kalyani (the village school headmistress) to a remote, hidden valley where her new husband's family live, braving again those incredibly high, dangerous roads through the mountains.

'A Beard in Nepal 2'  gives us more detail about the villagers lives, and the lives of the wonderful, happy village children, who live so very differently from their Western counterparts.

It also touches on the downside of life in Nepal today; the corruption, the destruction of the forests, lack of electricity, and lack of clean water.

'A Beard In Nepal 2' tells us about Fiona and Tod's encounter with black, poisonous spiders; how they avoided having to eat a cockerel; a water buffalo that snores so loudly it has to sleep in its own specially built shelter; and once again the nightmare of travelling in a local bus through the remote tracks in the high Himalayas.
The book also looks at developments in Kathmandu, such as the 'removal' of 10,000 street dogs in the last few months.
'A Beard In Nepal 3' is now published.
All of the 'Beard in Nepal' books are Amazon bestsellers and are available in paperback or eBook.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another exciting book 21 Jan 2013
By Carolyn
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Having read and enjoyed the first 'Beard in Nepal' book, I was delighted to find this follow up book, with more interesting adventures and again written in that informal and very funny style. I love the way that Fiona is able to poke fun at herself. It was so interesting reading about the villagers' lives, culture and ways, so different from ours. Even though the couple were clearly deeply upset at times by the difference in the way animals are treated, Fiona still maintains a strong element of respect for the difference in culture. And I could hardly bear read about the extremely large spider!
I enjoyed the book so much I bought copies for all my friends this Christmas - it's the kind of book that would appeal to most people.
I heard through the grapevine that a third trip is planned this year, I really hope this is correct because I can't wait to read the next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars "There and back again" 7 Nov 2012
By Carmel
The return to the village by Fiona and Tod is just as fascinating as their first journey but this time for different reasons. It is amazing how quickly things can change in this life no more so than the welcome they receive on their return
A truly wonderful account of life, people and a culture we know little about enlightening the reader at every turn.

5.0 out of 5 stars More adventures from the village 4 Nov 2012
After reading the first book about their adventures in Nepal I thoroughly enjoyed this one with more details about the people they revisited and also the eye-opening accounts of the hike from the village to the main road. Fiona has portrayed the life in the village with great compassion and the story of the dog brought tears to my eyes. However, we have to accept that different cultures have different attitudes to pets, money, bribery and so on and she is careful not to criticise their way of life when it differs so much from Britain. The joyful reunion with the friends they'd met in the past shows what high regard they had for Fiona and Tod and they are to be commended for the effort they made to bring gifts to the kids who basically have a very poor, but seemingly content, life. As with the first 'Beard' the geographical descriptions are excellent and one wonders if a third trip will follow with more adventures ....

5.0 out of 5 stars Book 2 of 3 31 May 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
As enjoyable as the first in the trilogy. Adventures and travels, both planned and unplanned in a foreign country can be daunting or as in this book incredibly funny and sometimes sad. Worth reading for anyone interested in the subject

3.0 out of 5 stars Lightweight 22 April 2014

Sequal to Beard in Nepal 1. Both could have been put into 1 book instead of spinning it out. Not much story line, very thin book with not many pages. Only interesting because I have been to Nepal a few times, otherwise not very interesting at all.
