Product Description

Product Description

Antonia (Stampfel) played a major role in shaping the coffee-house folk music scene in Greewich Village from the late 1950's well into the 1970's. She collaborated with Bob Dylan and many other musicians, above all the Holy Modal Rounders, for whom she wrote dozens of celebrated songs. Here are her songs, short stories, and personal letters, telling the story of one of the most fascinating women of our time!

The Unsung Song Master 22 Feb 2007
By Kathryn Frederick - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
If you are a Holy Modal Rounder fan, this is a must read. Antonia literally was the creator of the union of Peter Stampfel and Steve Weber, the Holy Modal Rounders of the sixties and ever after. Antonia would write the words and they would find the melody through her soul. Antonia was and is the unsung song master, but her songs only touch the surface of Antonia's writings. This book includes some of her short stories of erotica, personal letters and many photos. It stands as the testament of this amazing individual.

OK so I know the author 21 Feb 2007
By C. schell - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
OK so I know the author. Even if I didn't I'd give it 4 stars and probably 5 just for having the lyrics of all those great songs. If you have any interest in the fugs or the holy modal rounders you'll love this book. If you have any interest in the 60's village scene you'll enjoy this book.

If you know nothing about the 60's you can start learning here. The author's writing is amusing and informative but the book is mostly Antonia: her lyrics, stories, interviews, poems and her friends stories about her. Antonia managed to stay mostly unknown to the public at large but was much a respected force and talent among writers, artists, musicians and majicians of that drug-drenched karma-crazed era. The story of a life from inside the era and one that grew and grew old but always lived forward while never betraying herself, her ideas, or her friends. If only we were all like that.

The crazy aunt all the kids love 7 Mar 2007
By Jym Mooney - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Antonia's songs have been nourishing our hearts and minds for many years. Now we have collected in one place her scattered stories, poems, letters, and memories which flesh out our knowledge of and admiration for the beloved Antonia, someone who explored the outer edges of the universe and came back to tell the tale. She's like everybody's crazy aunt that the adults try not to talk about, but whom all the kids love like mad!
