4.0 out of 5 stars Bear-necessities of life... 21 Feb 2012

A great little DVD series for the lovers of Bear Grylls. In short, it addresses emergency situations that anyone may come across in their day to day lives (as opposed to the point in all of our lives when we are stranded in the peaks of Patagonia). Including but not limited to being chased by vicious dogs, drowning in a car, terrorist attacks and being mugged. He provides training in simple techniques that could save your life or that of a loved one in his usual light hearted, sometimes humorous approach to such serious subjects.

The show was clearly made for television as there are times where adverts would be inserted. This isn't a huge issue but can get tiresome when you are having to often watch recaps of something you learnt not 60 seconds previous (designed as a post-commercial refresh).

It is extremely scripted. Which it obviously has to be to move from point to point and also for safety reasons. Some of the scenarios do seem a little far fetched, borderline cheesy. Not only in their implementation but also in the techniques he uses to evade them. The dog chase turned into a scene from a b-movie as opposed to really providing much helpful information.

From a directing and photography standpoint, this doesn't hold a candle to his Born Survivor/Man vs Wild shows. But then how can day to day scenes compare with the visually stunning backdrops we have grown accustomed to seeing him risk life and limb in front of. That said, a lot of the action sequences are portrayed in as believable a way as possible, and are really rather exciting to watch.

Bottom line, this won't take your breath away.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good to know 16 April 2011
Full of information on how you can survive extreme situations anyone could be caught up in like if you drive your car into a river, how not to drown. You can see some clips of it on YouTube to find out more about what it's about. The only downside is it's quite repetitive. I guess because it was made for TV when there would be adverts every so often...

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful tips 4 May 2011
If you are a fan of Bear Grylls you will like this collection. It does seem sometimes a little scripted but due to being an American TV show that's just the way it's made. The information provided however is very good and it cannot hurt to know some of the things like how to break a car window or to put liquid into a t-shirt to prevent inhaling smoke. Overall educational and good entertainment.
