5.0 out of 5 stars breathtaking wilderness writing, 14 May 2007
This book blew me away. I was reading it on a bus on a rainy day in London, looked up and half expected to see the Ganges unfold before me. The description in the introduction of what happens when you encounter a magnificent wild animal in its natural habitat and time seems to stop is amazing. This is absolutely spot on and difficult to evoke without cliche, yet this is what Payton excels at doing.

Payton is an excellent writer, dispassionate and non-judgemental as the best reportage writers should be. When reporting on the difficult stuff (the appalling treatment of bear farmed for their bile, the sorry state of the brown bear in Italy, the appalling travesty that is the bear shoot of Colorado) he allows the cruelty to speak for itself, never taking the cheap (and obvious) shot of damning his subject(s), but allowing them to do it themselves...

That said, this book is far from all doom and gloom, the passages that show the bear's link to local folklore are fascinating, the stories of the gung-ho anti-poaching brigades of Cambodia are breathlessly exciting and the panda sex chunk manages to be uplifting, while bordering on the ridiculous.

I found this book to be immensely well-written and really exciting... To be recommended to anyone with an interest in bears, safari trips, wildlife or good travel writing in general
