Book Description

The secret life of paradise - what happens when the sun goes down?

Product Description

How does it feel to live and work in the world's most beautiful and luxurious tropical island resort, surrounded by white sandy beaches and aquamarine seas? How does it feel to be in the lap of luxury when you're thousands of miles from anywhere else? And when the guests are some of the richest and most demanding people in the world, where do you find the energy every day to smile, smile and smile again?

Beach Babylon takes you behind the scenes at a five-star tropical island resort. Do all the stories which take place behind the closed doors of the exclusive spa have happy endings? What do the world's richest people expect from room service during their fortnight in paradise? What does the windsurfing instructor do to keep sane after hours?

In the bestselling tradition of her previous Babylon books, Imogen Edwards-Jones investigates the rivalries and alliances between the staff at a resort where pandering to the guests' most extravagant whims is de rigueur. With a cast of millionaires, celebrities, hangers-on and prostitutes, Beach Babylon takes you to a world where extreme luxury is the norm and where excess somehow isn't always enough...

As the author of the Bradt Travel Guide to Maldives, and guide books and inflight magazine features on other beach destinations, I was fascinated to read BEACH BABYLON. Although the resort itself has been fictionalised and the incredible events of a resort manager's career packed into one hectic week, it rings so true.
From various clues (a Muslim country, aclohol confiscated from arriving passengers at the airport, the proximity of Colombo, Singapore, the Seychelles, Mauritius and Dubai) the setting seems to be the Maldives.
The author's sources of secrets about what happens behind the scenes are accurate as well as knowledgeable on wines and costs, making this an informative as well as an entertaining book. It is a fast-paced and often gripping read that ends too quickly, even though with a final philosophical flourish. Anyone thinking of holidaying or working in a "tropical paradise" will benefit by reading this book. Jolly good fun! (Royston Ellis)

A very good expose of the world of luxury resorts - really warts and all. A very witty read that will appeal to both sexes seems to be the general consensus from my Rep Team. You will love it if you watched the TV series, Hotel Babylon.

I have just finished reading Beach Babylon and really enjoyed it. I have read the other Babylon books (pop to go) and this is second best against Hotel. It's has all the markings of Hotel but with the added extras of Sand, money, drink and very, very rich people.
This follows a week in the life of a Hotel manager at a luxury 6 star resort. An island in the middle of nowhere for the rich and famous and somehow they cater for their every whim with no resources. How the staff cope with being stuck on an island and being cut off from the `real' world. Brilliant insight of what goes on behind the scenes.

Not bad for true to life account
The only thing that made this book enjoyable for me was the knowledge that it was all true/really happened - this is what kept me reading. Read more

Beach Babylon
Of the Babylon Series, I would put this second.
It gives you an idea of what goes on on a tropical island - it is not all
about sun, sea & sex.

Having read (and enjoyed) Wedding Babylon, Air Babylon and Hotel Babylon, I couldn't wait to start this one. Unfortunately, it was no-where near as good as the previous three. Read more
