Good for understanding dogs with poblems but don't buy if you are wanting a step by step training manual,

THIS BOOK IS NOT A HOW TO TRAINING MANUAL. As Cesar himself says he is not a dog trainer. Please don't buy it if you are wanting to find out how to train your new puppy or teach your dogs to sit, give a paw etc.
Ok that out of the way this book is a good read even if your dog does not have behavioural problems. It helps you understand how dogs think and does give some info on how to become the leader of your dog, the pack leader. I have to admit that I was hoping for a bit more detail on how to on this - kind of like number 1 do this, number 2 do this etc. There are tips in the back for certain situations but I think I was looking more for a training manual. My 3 month old Chihuahua is getting a little bit too nibbly with my son and I wanted to learn how to stop that. Although this book did show me how to use a touch (claw like - NO pain) to correct him when he does this as other dogs would and so far it is kind of working.

As a professional dog balancer I would like to suggest that instead of relying on the opinions of others you make up your own mind about this book by using a methodology that was suggested by the martial arts master Bruce Lee. He said to "Research your own experience, absorb what is useful, reject what is useless and add what is uniquely your own".
This philopsophy allows you to obtain genuine wisdom and true understanding. As someone who works with dogs that have issues I have found that the "leader of the pack" style as used by both Cesar Millan and Jan Fennel to be the ONLY way to create a real and solid foundation for change. Once you are leader and the dog knows this you will be amazed at how many unwanted behaviours vanish! Other methods can of course be applied and are effective but if you apply Cesar's methods with an open mind you will create a bond with your dog or dogs that will be the key that opens the door to the kind of relationship you have always wanted! Buy this great book, use the principles, absorb what works for you, add your own unique touches and discard the rest!

"Be The Pack Leader" is a very different book to Cesar's first book "Cesars Way". As a professional dog trainer I know though experience that the system which Cesar outlines in this book needs to form the base of any effective dog training program.
Like the great martial artist Bruce Lee said we need to "Research our own experience, absorb what is useful, reject what is useless and add what is uniquely our own". Cesar's method (which is very similar to Jan Fennels) focuses on you becoming your dogs 'alpha' or 'pack leader'. In "Be The Pack Leader" he offers powerful guidance as to how to create the leadership skills you need to create a balanced and happy dog. Once this foundation is built, then and ONLY then are other methods (clicker training, obedience work) likely to have any real effect. Bruce Lee also counselled us to have "No way as way and no limitation as limitation". Cesars methods allow us to be creative and innovative with the way we work with our canine friends. "Be The Pack Leader" is a book which I have found very useful in my work and I recommend it VERY highly to all those who wish to work with their dogs and to create trust and respect!
