I'd never read any of Zoe Barnes's novels before picking up this one, but I was searching for the genre of female fiction which includes how to cope as a working mother. This book, set in Barnes's native Cheltenham, is the story of Lorna, a midwife before the birth of her children and the ensuing chain of events which mark her return to full time work.
The characters are believable and well formed, especially Lorna's best friend, the-big-hearted-but-unlucky-in-love Carmen and there's a fair sprinkling of human interest sub-plots to keep the reader hooked. In short, an excellent book and a perfect book to enliven any commute or place on the bedside table.
