Book Description

5 July 2004

One boy’s exploration of what it takes to be “cool”, how to get a girl and what (not) to do when you’ve got one…

What do you do if you’re not cool?
If girls are just an impossible (wet) dream?
Simple.
Take a pill containing a supercomputer that travels to your brain and tells you how to be cool – all the time! In the voice of your choice!
Then, it’s goodbye porn and geekdom, and hello hot chicks, parties and a whole new perspective on life.

Meet Jeremy – the guy with a heart, who exchanges the **** in his hand for a squip in his head.

Review

"Very funny, well observed and well written. Very clever story, beautiful executed – definitly one to take notice of, and one of the cleverest plots I've come across in a long time." MELVIN BURGESS

"Hip, funky, funny and immensely entertaining – Vizzini's debut is a novel of modern teen times that will resonate with all who choose to indulge in it's hilarious excess." JOHN MCLAY

"Comic and intelligent … he shows a real talent for self-deprecating humour." Publishers Weekly

"Ned Vizzini is a young genius. And if he were old, he would be an old genius. It doesn't matter. This kid can write!" Jonathan Ames, author of What's Not to Love and The Extra Man

"Be More Chill is a sharp social commentary disguised as a high school sex (or no sex, in our hero's case) comedy. I was thoroughly entertained by Vizzini's clever take on the insanity (and inanity) of contemporary teendom." Megan McCafferty, author of Sloppy Firsts and Second Helpings

"His wonderfully sardonic voice … suggests a wisdom beyond his years." School Library Journal.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great Teen Read 11 July 2004
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
'Be More Chill' written by Ned Vizzini, published by Harper Collins

An amazing book with a realistic plot that provides an interesting and frank insight into boys' minds.

Jeremy Heere buys himself a 'squip', which is a miniature computer (with Keanu Reeves' voice) that lodges into his brain and lets him know how to be cool. It's all in the hopes of impressing Christine who he likes (until he's squipped, then he 'digs' her !). But, is Christine cool enough for the squip?

Girls: the secret of the way boys' minds work is finally revealed in this book!

Boys: There are some GREAT tips on how to be cool. 5/5

Caitlin

4.0 out of 5 stars Be More Chill by Ned Vizzini 7 July 2004
Format:Paperback
This book is not at all like something I would normally read and when I looked at the front cover I wasn't sure whether I would enjoy it. But then I remembered, 'never judge a book by its cover', so I began to read and was pleasantly surprised when I realised I was quite enjoying the book.
The book focuses on one main character and a few of his friends and family. The main character - Jeremy, is a total geek, obsessed by computers, television and a beautiful girl at his school called Christine. He has almost no friends and no life until he finds out about something, which could change his life forever. This thing is a squip; an intelligent mini chip which when implanted in your body instructs you how to be cool and how to get what you want. It seems too good to be true, and you can bet your bottom dollar that it is!
This book is amazingly well written and will be quickly devoured by any teenager who is willing to give something a bit different a try. However some of the content is quite 'adult' with surprisingly detailed references made to drugs, alcohol etc, therefore I don't think this book would really be suitable for anyone under 13. I hope that this review might inspire you to go and get the book because I think it's an interesting and sometimes quite funny read.

I saw the cover of this book and i thought it looked quite cool.I then read the blurb and thought wow i am going to enjoy this.I began to read and was really impressed with what i read. All thought it does take a while to get in to the book i would recomend that you keep on reading even if you do find it boring to start off with.It does get better.
Jeremy is a young teenager who is a bit of a dork this soon changes when a friend tells him a bout a great little gadget you can buy for around 600 bucks a squip.A squip is a mini computer inside a pill that you swallow and the computer lodges in your brain and it tells you how to be cool.
i would reccomend this book for teenagers due to the use of bad language and sexual refferences.
Over all i really enjoyed this book and i would give it 10/10
