5.0 out of 5 stars Be Mine Tonight is top-notch entertainment! 29 April 2008
By Marissa
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Friday, the 13th of October, 1307
By order of the King of France, Severian de Foncé and his five friends, all mercenaries, raided a Templar's keep to find the Holy Grail. They found a cup and all six drunk from it, except that the cup they drunk from was not the Holy Grail but the Unholy Grail. Their doom was sealed with this one action, for who drinks from the Unholy Grail becomes a son of Lilith, or better said, a vampire...

Tintagel, Cornwall, 1899
Prudence Ryland is a spirited woman who wants to enjoy every facet of life, but she is seriously ill and has not much time left in this world, she desperately wants to find the Holy Grail to prolong her life. The Church has given her permission for the excavation of a parcel of land where she is convinced the Grail is hidden, provided that she hands over the Grail if she finds it. The Church has send a historian to help her, a certain Mr. Chapel. She immediately feels attracted to this handsome, mysterious stranger who shuns the sunlight. He seems to like her too, could this be her chance of a life-time to experience unbridled passion?

Severian de Foncé now goes by the name of Chapel. He hopes to save his soul by serving the Church and to see to it that the Unholy Grail will never be found again. So now he is in Cornwall to protect the interests of the Church. The moment he meets Prudence he feels this strong attraction for her, she is the first woman in 600 years who touches his heart. Therefore, he is flabbergasted when he finds out why she so desperately wants to find the Holy Grail. He could save her life, he should because he does not want to lose her, but does he truly dare to risk her soul by giving her his immortal kiss?

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent thought provoking thriller!!!! 21 Jan 2008
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Chapel used to be a courageous yet arrogant man, who feared nothing. Six centuries ago, he crashed the inner sanctuary of the Knights Templar in order to gain immortality by drinking from the Holy Grail they guarded. He penetrated their barriers, defeated their guardians, and drank from the cup. Now he knows six hundred years later that he will roam forever condemned satiating his he11ish thirst drinking blood at night.

However, he has found a reason to live when his eyes feast upon brave Prudence Ryland, but she is dying from ovarian cancer. Her only hope to live rests with drinking from the same cup that has condemned Chapel to be outside anything holy. However, he offers an alternative means to eternity; his passionate kiss of death and rebirth if he dares.

This is a magnificent vampire romance with an intriguing plot twist involving Prudence's health making her choices between unlife and death. The story line is fast-paced as Chapel wonders whether he should condemn his beloved to a life of sorrow and regret though he admits love makes it worth while. Pru is a fabulous protagonist symbolizing much more than a strong protagonist with a dilemma; she embodies life's complexities of much of the modern biological ethics debate; this inside a paranormal romance will have readers toast Kathryn Smith for this excellent thought provoking thriller!!!! I'd also recommend reading Tino Georgiou's bestselling novel--The Fates--if you haven't yet!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brotherhood of blood 20 April 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
An amazingly well written book it's not often you find series's regarding vampires that are so well written and while these are definitely love stories unlike the majority out there they have just enough sex to be interesting without being smutty will definitely be investing in the rest of the series

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty decent read, interesting take on vampires 28 April 2012
By Tali
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Well i must admit i've not quite finished this book, but am only around 10% from doing so and have enjoyed the story thus far.

Although a little slower paced than most books in this genre, it's not boring and there's enough good character interaction and events happening to keep you interested (despite those interactions and events being less action-packed than some might have expected). I also took into account that this is the first in the series and thus probably has to explain more so as to be introductory. I can't say this is the best book i've read, its not, but its far from the worst.

Part of what attracted me to this series is that its not a contemporary setting - and there are certainly not enough supernatural/romance novels that are not contemporary of late. The way the writer presents the era is also straight forward and not likely to confuse anyone - i've little knowledge of the era but found very few references that made me pause and think. Yet for that, the atmosphere and character behaviours still reflect the times, and to me at least, made it all that more interesting to read.

I enjoyed it but as I said, it is slow at times. A nice read for a quiet afternoon. I shall be getting the sequels once my pay check arrives :)

2.0 out of 5 stars Where's the action? 25 May 2008
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Ok, I'll confess, I didn'tread the whole book right through. I read as far as page 214,then skipped onto the end. It was exactly as I expected, so I don't feel I missed anything.

The book has a good premis, but the plot was plodding, there was no action by page 214, and the characters were boring.

I think I'll go and reread Kelsey Cole's "A Hunger like no other" for the n-th time.
