Variations on a Theme 18 April 2007
Format:Audio CD
Dont know where I first heard of this band.. but i am listening to it now and i like it a lot. The comparisons to the Arcade Fire are inevitable as on openers, "Brother" and others including "Ida, My", they produce similar epic soundscapes that are orchestral in feel. At other times they verge on world music, referencing perhaps Graceland era Paul Simon. But they never stray too fair to be consumed in their own pomposity - which is the often the risk when exploring such themes. By mid album, classic song structures are adopted, which while piano driven are mixed up by the drums - almost samba like on "Carry Around" - which carry the unusuality and intrigue of the record. The album finishes with the double of "Father & "Sway" - where that Arcade Fire comparison can be heard again, but also Radiohead or Thom Yorke's solo stuff. All in all an interesting and satisfying album which is imediate enough to like right away but also challenges enough to reward multiple listen.

Mediocre 1 May 2007
Format:Audio CD
Annuals have been compared to many other bands but don't really bring much of their own to the table on this album. They are certainly technically talented but the music is pistache and never really goes anywhere. Stick with the bands that influenced this one.

If you have heard the demos and heard the talk you'll know the comparisons that have been made. Mercury Rev, Flaming Lips, Arcade Fire, Secret Machines and Semifinalists are all sound-alikes but as with all these bands there is individuality to Annuals.

I'd recommend anyone to buy this album if they are into any of the above. Just like 'Funeral' the Arcade Fire full debut the songs are relatively short for what is essentially prog-rock. But just like Arcade Fire song 'Wake Up', 'Complete or Completing' suggests that euphoria can be built over a long type of song. There are lots and lots of positives but what is so exciting about this album is that you can just tell that they are a band ready to let loose over their next few LP's. Certainly any fan should be in for the long haul and you should definately check them out when the tour the UK soon.
