5.0 out of 5 stars Mamma Mia meets the Dalai Lama 1 Oct. 2009
Format:Paperback
Over the Summer, I re-read `Happiness Now' and was so impressed (again) at Robert Holden's knowledge, insight, wisdom and the sheer poetry of his writing.
It got me wondering what else he'd written since 1997 and discovered this brand new book. If I'm honest my fear was whether "Be Happy" was a re-hash of previous (albeit good) work.

This fear was totally unfounded. "Be Happy" is remarkable on so many different levels.

For a book `about' happiness to evoke such joy while you're reading it is, takes some doing! Robert has such an obvious love of language and its beauty. His intelligence, wit, and playful use of language shines through. To me at least, the mark of `literature' is how slowly you choose to read something. This was therefore a slow read for me. I chose to absorb, rather than merely read the words.

His blank page in the book where you are invited to write your own definition of happiness provoked me to write "To feel at ease and at peace with who I am, where I am and what I choose to do for myself and others." Worth the price just for helping me to realise this.

One paragraph he writes "....happiness is not a mental idea; it is the ground of your being. Happiness is not learned; it is remembered. There is no pass or fail. Happiness is not to be understood; it is to be enjoyed. Happiness happens when you least inspect (sic) it..."

Robert Holden PhD deserves enormous thanks for creating such an outstanding contribution to happiness and humanity.

If "Be Happy" was a film, it would probably be "Mamma Mia meets the Dalai Lama." With a definite Oscar for 'Best Screenplay".

And for me, this coming Christmas will be the easiest I've ever had for buying gifts that will be appreciated! Thank you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Warm, witty, down-to-earth good sense 4 Oct. 2009
Format:Paperback
If you're worried that Robert Holden is one of those self-help writers who are so self-righteously worthy that they make you feel guilty, then don't be. He comes across as a beacon of good sense and a warm, wise and funny human being whose writing is a joy to read - intelligent yet totally accessible, literate but down-to-earth. He won't have you striving for perfection or dazzled by unreachable goals - this book will lead you gently along a path of self-acceptance and a recognition of the joy already existing in your world in a way that will inspire and enhance every aspect of your life. Add to that some great stories, jokes and quotations from my favourite poets and I'm hooked - if I could give it more than five stars, I would.

Thoroughly recommended for anyone who loves good writing, feeling inspired and being happy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book, but I have reservations... 26 Oct. 2009
By CMP
Format:Paperback
This is a surprisingly wise, insightful and inspirational book - I agree with the reviews below on its worth. However, I think the book might be less than useful to some people, and positively harmful to others, so I would approach it with caution. In some ways it merits six stars, and in other ways it merits zero.

The book's premise is that happiness is an attitude, not an attribute to be acquired. I agree with that. However, the book seems to assume that developing the happiness attitude is entirely a matter of personal choice and willpower, and makes no mention at all of factors that may be contributing to a low level of happiness no matter how determined the reader may be to happy-up. For example, a person who is in an abusive relationship without being aware of it, or a person with undiagnosed mental illness, or a person on medication with side-effects, an addicted person, or a person with unresolved trauma in their past (such as rape), is likely to have barriers to achieving the 'happiness attitude'. Somewhere in the book there needs to be some kind of advice along the lines of 'if this book doesn't work for you, see a therapist or a doctor'.

The book does not ask the reader to take any kind of personal audit, to assess whether their own behaviours are compatible with 'finding their joy'. It seems clear to me that someone who is not at peace with their own conscience may be chronically underhappy, and therefore keen to pick up this book. If you're, say, having an affair, or stealing from your employer, or someone who consistently tells lies - then your happiness potential is almost certainly going to be limited. The danger, I feel, is that this book will simply encourage you not to feel guilty about 'finding your joy' in a motel room with someone else's spouse.

5.0 out of 5 stars So much better than I had expected 21 Jun. 2010
Format:Paperback
This book was recommended by a friend and I thought it was going to be a light frothy book about increasing your happiness level - which it is - but far from light and frothy. A deep thinking book with it's roots in A Course In Miracles, Robert Holden is an engaging writer and there was lots to be got from the many exercises even for someone who has done many years of this type of work. If Louise Hay got lots out of it, I felt there was every hope I would too! I have never written a review before, but I know I would never have chosen it had it not been recommended by a friend, so thought I would highlight it for like minded people.
