Product Description

Synopsis

Summarising his core teachings, this Dharma talk, given by Thich Nhat Hanh to the residents at a correctional institution, shows how mindfulness practice cultivates freedom no matter where you are. Thich Nhat Hanh argues that freedom is not given to us by anyone; we have to cultivate it ourselves. Included is a description by Sister Chan Khng of how Thich Nhat Hanh's visit influenced those that attended and encouraged their practice.

Thich Naht Hanh has a simple writing style to describe a simple concept, so simple it is difficult to grasp !

Speaking as someone who began meditation from books alone, with no group support for years, I disagree with S. Olsen: if you have sufficient interest and determination you will not stop; and if you don't, then not even a group will keep you at it (which is not to deny that group support is preferable). Once you really begin to experience the fruits of meditation, nothing will stop you, with or without group support.

Secondly, none of the several books of T.N.H's that I have read say you will stop meditating after 3 months if you have no group to practise with, although they do emphasize the benefits and importance of belonging to a group.

As to not buying any of T.N.H's books unless you have a group for support and direction, I would say that for those who do not have the benefit of a group, it is even more important and beneficial to read the books, which are a tremendous source of support and direction, read slowly and mindfully. You will find yourself returning to them again and again as a rich and inexhaustible source of wisdom and inspiration and down-to-earth practical advice. Of the hundreds of books on Buddhist meditation I have read over several decades, in my opinion none are more valuable for those working alone to develop meditation and mindful living than those of Thich Nhat Hanh. He is a true Bhodisattva.

Finally, I would urge anyone wanting to develop meditation and taste its fruits to sit a retreat led by an experienced bona vide teacher. There are many to choose from these days without going too far from home (including Thich Nhat Hanh). A retreat gives an invaluable kick-start to one's practice (as well as providing great contacts for on-going support).

As always I find Thich Nhat Hanh 's teachings spot on to address human's challenges and sufferings and to bring much soothing and hope through his compassion.
