More About the Author

I, Rus(sell) Slater was born in Amman in Jordan in 1961, the son of a British Foreign Office Communications officer. After early years in Czechoslovakia, Iraq, The Soviet Union and the Persian Gulf I was educated as a boarder at Wellingborough School in Northamptonshire.

After leaving school I spent two years working for a TV company and an advertising agency before joining the British Army in 1981.

I entered the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 1982 and this is where I was first formally educated in managing and leading people and teams. He was commissioned in the Royal Engineers and studied at the Royal School of Military Engineering at Chatham, where I was trained in project management techniques, planning and technical skills.

For six years I led and managed troops engaged in such disparate activities as building airstrips and camps in Belize, flood relief in Northern England and, in 1987, a part of the Royal Tournament at Earls Court. My final military role was as a training troop commander, training young leaders and specialists in military engineering.

After transferring to the Regular Army Reserve of Officers, I worked as a recruitment consultant and at the same time studied by correspondence, obtaining my Institute of Personnel Management and Institute of Training and Development qualifications.

Since 1991 I have been predominantly self employed acting as a freelance training specialist and management consultant. I have worked with such organizations as the Royal Colleges of Midwives, Pathologists, Paediatritions and Ophthalmologists, the Learning and Skills Council, Hyder Consulting and Mott MacDonald, Fremantle Media and Ford.

I am also a subject matter expert at www.peoplealchemy.co.uk having produced management guides on Event Planning and Management, Vision and Mission, Problem Solving, Client Account Management, Mapping and Improving Processes, Communicating Change and Managing the Survivors of Redundancy Programmes.

I devote some of my professional time to charity through www.ukcharitydays.co.uk and have helped Guide Dogs, CHASE, British Society for Rheumatology, Essex and Berkshire Air Ambulance and Startup.

I am happily married to Caroline and have two sons, Alex and Freddy.

Review

"For anyone thinking of taking that first step into management or already in a management role but feeling a little lost and lonely this book is a must. Rus has a lively and engaging writing style and walks you through how to be a better manager over the course of seven days. The book is divided into days with each section covering a different component of effective leadership and management. Each section in a few pages covers what other leadership books take much longer to explain. With top tips, things to consider, bear traps and pitfalls Rus explains techniques that will have a real impact and set you apart from other managers or leaders. At the end of each section is a Q & A section which is well worth doing! All in all I highly recommend this book." (Louise Frayne, Head of HR & Organisational Development, Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health)

Immediate and immensely helpful. 4 July 2014

This book really does hold the essential knowledge to being a better manager in a week. After reading and implementing the lessons, I have become a much more efficient and effective manager who is more capable than ever in leading my team to success. Of course this book is only meant to be a starting point to effective management but it does just that. I would also recommend to experienced managers who need to get back to basics. If you know someone who is going into management I whole heartedly recommend that you gift them this book.

Basic info but good points and I like the way the writer includes his own life tips. Glad I got this. A 'make sense' book.
