This is a family saga written in a way that gives it an 80/90s feel with dark themes running all the way through.
Sarah Harrison wrote several books during the 80s which were very popular at the time. I had not read this book then and came across it in a secondhand book sale recently.
The expectations of an easy to read typical family saga were exceeded. There are all sorts of dark themes running through the plot which have a varying effect on the characters: extra marital sex, bad parenting, AIDS, childhood misbehaviour and loads more.
Unusually, compared to more recent books on similar themes, the plot runs in a strictly chronological order which worked well, graduualy revealing the story.
The style of the book gives away that it was written nearly 20 years ago and reading it is a nostalgic experience. If the book was written again today it would have a different structure and would be considered literary fiction rather than a family saga.
Recommend to anyone - if you can get hold of a copy!!

This was a very good book, highly recommended. Larger than life characters and a very good plot made the pages pretty much turn themselves.
