4.0 out of 5 stars Pure Soul., 18 Aug 2001
This review is from: Be Altitude - Respect Yourself (Audio CD)
Taking the gospel roots of soul and the funky sound of the seventies, The Staple Singers create a pot of early seventies soul delights that cannot fail to captivate.

From commercial sides like Respect Yourself and I'll Take You There, to political led songs like We The People and I'm Just Another Soldier, you journey the whole realm of soul from this period.

Expertly produced and, although there are no band credits, I'm sure at least a few of The MGs are present. It's all in the performance, Mavis and Pops Staples, especially, giving it there all.

The Staple Singers took their Gospel background and mixed in country-soul, funk, and blues. Their remarkable voices, especially that of Mavis, have a power which is unequalled by any. Pop Staples guitar playing is an understated wonder. His influence as a guitarist has been acknowledged by such diverse talents as Robbie Robertson of the Band and the late, great Curtis Mayfield. Blast this out on a Sunday morning (any morning) and watch the clouds part and the sun come shining through.
