Biography

Biography by Andrew Leahey
One of the most recognizable characters in modern-day R&B, Beyoncé first rose to fame as the siren-voiced centerpiece of Destiny's Child before embarking on a multi-platinum solo career in 2001. Booming record sales, Grammy awards, movie roles, and a romance with rapper/CEO Jay-Z combined to heighten her profile in the 2000s, making the singer a virtual mainstay in the… Read more in Amazon's Beyonce Store

Amazon.co.uk Review

History may prove Beyoncé's B'Day to be a rare double-whammy of an achievement. Not only is it destined to hold up as one of the thumpingest, most polished-sounding discs of 2006, it's also bound to loose a new phrase into the popular lexicon: a "freekum dress" (n.), as described on a same-named track halfway through this excellent CD, is a "right-fittin'" garment owned by every woman; "when they act wrong, that's when you put it on." Linguistic hijinks aside, here is Beyoncé as the public rarely sees her: fully liberated and artistically fearless. "Ring the Alarm," a big-banging, fire-alarm-clanging wake-up call to a cheating man, finds her seething; "Kitty Kat," a feline-like size-up of a stale relationship helped along by the still innovative Neptunes, shows her spurned; the womanly, fire-in-the-belly come-on "Suga Mama" gets her way, way worked up; and the crackling, vocally volcanic "Resentment" steeps her in Aretha-caliber soul. For all the disc's solo trailblazing, though, where it really soars is on one of two duets with Jay-Z: While "Up Grade U" chugs along entertainingly enough about the good life ("I'm talkin' spa bags and fly pads and rooms at the Bloomberg"), opener "Deja Vu" blasts out a bomp-bomp beat nobody with a head to nod could resist. Cake, candles, and Cristal or no, B'Days rarely get this good. --Tammy La Gorce

Breathtakingly Fresh 23 Sep 2006
By Hooper
Format:Audio CD
I bought this the day it came out after loving Deja Vu which is a brilliant song but on her new album it almost blends into the background. This whole album has a very new and fresh sound that if anything is a bit ahead of its time. But this whole album is absolutely brilliant. Generally this is a fast paced hip hop and R&B album with many club suited tracks. However unlike her previous album, Dangerously In Love, there is no filler partly due to its length.

The best tracks on this album are:

1.Resentment

Skipped this track on first playing but that was a complete mistake. This is head and shoulders above all the other songs on the album. Beyonce's voice has really progressed and become even stronger than before and more brassy. This is her show case. One of my favourtie songs of the year.

2.Get Me Bodied

This is another track that at first I didn't pay any attention to but now I absolutely love it. It has got a brilliant beat and I love the chorus and the bridge. Can't help but love this track and would be absolutely amazing in a club.

3.Green Light

This is track Beyonce wrote with the Neptunes and has a similar sort of feel to Crazy In Love with the heavy brass chorus. This is another very catchy song that is irrestible.

4. Listen

This is one of the bonus tracks that is a sweeping ballad that she sings very well. The only problem with it though is that I don't like the way it ends so abruptly.

5.Check On It

The song for the pink panther and still sounds great despite being a year old. I will never get bored of this track.

Other songs that are worth a mention are: Suga Mama (reminds me of 'Work It Out' on her last album but is fresher and better) Freakum Dress (great upbeat track) and Ring The Alarm - this track gets better the more you listen to it. In general I was very happy with this album and its new sound despite my initial disappointment upon first hearing. Certainly worth buying and it is better than Christina Aguilera's new album.

'B-Day' is a great album. It has all the required elements to make an R&B classic: heavy beats, great vocals, world-class production, big collaborations and of course, Beyonce's incredible sex appeal. But even with all this there's still something missing...depth.

Beyonce has somehow managed to create a whole album comlpetely lacking in substance. Tracks like Freakum Dress, Get Me Bodied and Suga Mama are great for getting down on a dancefloor, and truly prove that she is still the number 1 R&B artist around, but anyone looking for anything more than sex, partying and the love material possessions aren't going to find it here!

Where are the meaningful and liberating lyrics that songs like 'Survivor', 'Through With Love' and 'Independant Women' have made Beyonce famous for? These tracks are when Beyonce is truly at her best, and yet she seems to have completely neglected them here.

Other than with the bonus track 'Listen' written for her new movie 'Dreamgirls', Beyonce basically sold out.

That aside, this is still a great album with standout tracks including 'Upgrade U' and 'Irreplacable' amongst others, and i can't wait to see her perform them live when she tours, but seriously Beyonce...stop being so 2-dimensional and show some depth!!

hmmm...... 10 Sep 2006
Format:Audio CD
I am a big fan of beyonce but I expected more from her... This album jus feels hollow to me. It just doesnt satify me like beyoncés other albums. She is talented lady and i have all of the destinys child albums and dangerously in love to prove it but this album seems rushed. A lot songs sound very similar to each other.... very staccato and loud! I think beyonce is going to wake up any day now and think to herself "ooops"!

The only songs i like are Deja vu, ring the alarm, get me bodied, upgrade you, irreplacable, freekum dress and resentment but the only song that has a trace of the beyonce zing is resentment. It has good harmonies but beyoncés voice cracks all over the track.

This album is not good but a few tracks stop it from being completly bum...

An improvement on the first album...
Shorter and more concise as a record. Lots of potential hits. Tedious bonus track in the form of "Listen". Still needs to learn English grammar. Read more

Beyond belief
American music sucks and it sucks bad. But you know what? This album is no music at all. It is just filled with all R&B horrible trademarks. Boring and annoying.
