Format: Paperback
This is an original look at the Bayeux tapestry, concentrating primarily not on accurate images of the work nor on the historical background, both of which are well-documented, but on the makers of the work, the sources of their inspiration and how they worked. To have this famous work analysed by an embroiderer, with the addition of her characterful clear illustrations, really helps us to understand why the makers translated this cataclysmic event into embroidery in the way they did. The addition of a possible version of the missing end piece, reconstructed by Jan Messent, is an intriguing bonus. The contents of the book I found really fascinating. My only serious problem with it was the calligraphy- beautiful and a work of art in itself, but too small for older readers, and even more difficult when the contrast was reduced by use of coloured pages. The author recognises potential problems by giving the text again in normal type at the back. Apart from the difficulty of matching pictures and text back and forth, this act of kindness is rather lost because it's placed right at the end of the book, after the booklist and acknowledgments, and not as far as I can see, signposted earlier in the book or in the contents! I'm still giving 5 stars- it may have involved a bit of effort to read, but it was worth it!

While there is certainly a lot of information contained in the book, the poorly selected typeface makes reading a chore. And the images consist of sketches reinterpretting the tapestry, rather than photographs of the actual work. All in all, if I had seen the book in a shop rather than ordering it by post, I doubt I would have bought it. It's a pity really. I have several other books by the author and had expected more from her on this topic.

I agree with other reviewers that the main decorative text is not that easy to read but it adds to the beauty of this book and as is pointed out, all the text is given in conventional font later in the book. I love this book as it really helps to understand the creative process of this treasure not just the contents and the narrative. It is one of many books on the Tapestry that I have bought lately but this is the first to show me in detail how the clever ladies completed their task.

It is a much larger book than I had expected but that is all to the good as the wonderful colour illustrations are really clear. I can recommend this to anyone who is interested in the craft side of the Bayeux Tapestry as well as in its history in general.

Good material, poor presentation 26 Jan. 2014

This book has some very interesting information and a great color chart of dye colors available in the period, but the text is in a fancy psuedo-period calligraphic font that seriously limits its readability. Thin, small, over-flourished script in which letters frequently are not even on the same base line as the general text makes reading this book a major trial for anyone with less than perfect eyesight. I can't judge how it is for people with perfect eyesight, but I suspect at the very least it's annoying. I deeply regret the publisher's decision to give priority artistic novelty rather than the quality of the content; this could have been a star book otherwise. Buy it for the excellent information it contains, if you need that information, but don't expect it to be a pleasant, relaxed read
