I adore Bax. Roll over Plotinus: hearing the finale of the Fifth (Thomson / LPO) as I drove through a pine plantation in the twilight in 2005 was the greatest mystical experience of my life. To my mind, his music is either first rate or junk-bonds.
Like my fellow reviewer JT52, I have repeatedly returned to Winter Legends and the Saga Fragment in the hope of reassigning it from the latter category to the former. It has its advocates. There is much to be said in favour of this disc. The performers are superlative; not only are they idiomatic but they have clearly bought into the composer's vision. Moreover, the recording is in the best traditions of Chandos.
For the tenth time, alas, I have reaffirmed the previous position: akin to the bootleg tapes of Count Hugo Wankle and the Dixieland Funktime Band, this is meandering slop. If this is inspiration, what the hell: I might as well compose a Ninth Symphony and throw in some hammer blows of fate for good measure. Those Baxians among us who think otherwise: I salute you. You're made of sterner stuff than yours truly.
That's it: I won't bother with this disc again.
