The Bauhaus Archiv Museum of Design in Berlin holds the most important collection on the Bauhaus today. Documents, workshop products from all areas of design, studies sketches in the classroom, and architectural plans and models are all part of its comprehensive inventory. "The Bauhaus Archiv" is dedicated to the study and presentation of the history of the Bauhaus, including the new Bauhaus in Chicago and the Hochschule fur Gestaltung (Institute of Design) in Ulm. Format:Hardcover
It is a veritable minefield, trying to find a useful, unpretentious guide to what is unquestionably the most influential design house of the twentieth century worldwide. Not only is the volume reasonably priced, but it is illustrated with the best of examples of the timeless designs, and breaks down the facelessness associated with many art books. Droste not only more than accomplishes an extremely reasonable attempt at explaining the mystique behind the Bauhaus, but she also manages to place the school within its rightful place among modernist art and architecture in the 20th century. The book makes an ideal guide to the Bauhaus and its innovators, and will also direct readers who may not recognise the great artists and designers within, to other more detailed synopses and guides available. For someone like me, who admired the Bauhaus from a distance, but who knew little in depth of the personalities involved, this is an ideal starting point to appreciate probably the greatest influence on modern art and architecture yet.

A brilliantly priced well produced and durable guide to the movement. Many excellent pictures and Droste's writing is unpretentious, clear and entertaining. An invaluable resource for anyone studying or even merely (like myself) interested in Bauhaus design. I cannot stress enough the quality of the book for it's price. A bargain and one of the better art books I've come across.

Great book about a great school 26 Feb 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Bauhaus was one of the most important movements in design-history.
Magdalena Drosta describes the ideas, the people, the work and the spirit of the Bauhaus. The best thing: It is never boring. The book does not only concentrate on the art taught at the Bauahaus but also describes its political problems.
A lot of excellent pictures in a good priniting quality (especially in relation to the price) make this a book, you always like to look at.

What makes this one stand out as a must read book about Bauhaus 12 May 2006
By K. Corn - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
If you want a comprehensive historical information as well as tons of full color photos of all sorts of Bauhaus inspired works -from architecture to practical objects - this is the book you should have. Open it and read a single article, think about it and close the book. Or browse through the photos and marvel at the teapots, the furniture, the architectural style.

You can savor this one slowly (and I think you should) rather than trying to read it through all at once. If you do that, you'll start to get a sense of the Bauhaus style and how it fits into the particular period when it came into being - and how it grew and evolved from there.

Excellent source for Bauhaus visual info 1 Oct 2005
By sparkling angel - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
While this book offers an excellent collection of images related to the Bauhaus, it traces the history and the development of the Bauhaus comprehensively as well.

This book, alongwith Eva Forgacs' Bauhaus Idea and Bauhaus Politics can give you a general idea about what the institution was all about.

Its an amazing read.
