Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

In the wake of Star Wars (1977) came many a space opera seeking box-office glory. Battlestar Galactica (1978) started life as a television series, though after the pilot episode swept the ratings in America a shortened version was released in cinemas overseas. Composer Stu Philips's score was issued on LP and recycled through the life of the series, and this album is effectively a remake of that original release, with the composer himself winning strong performances from the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. A dark "Prologue" leads to a rousing statement of the memorably heroic main theme. What follows is a complex, rather melancholy action score far grander in conception than the series for which it was written. There is a percussive fury to Phillips's writing, together with a foreboding lyrical quality which inevitably evokes comparisons with John Williams's great score for Star Wars, but also stands proudly in a tradition of fantasy music traceable to Bernard Herrmann's The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad (1958). Stu Phillips also composed the music for producer Glenn A. Larson's Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (1978), as well as the 1970's Spider-Man TV series, but it is his powerful Battlestar Galactica that remains his most enjoyable and lasting contribution to fantasy television. --Gary S Dalkin

4.0 out of 5 stars Heroic score altough occasionally fragmented 30 Jan 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This CD updates the sound quality on the previously available LP version and contains extra and elongated tracks.
Having purchased the LP soundtrack to Battlestar Galactica some 20 years ago I found myself noticing the differences, aside from the lack of scratches and clicks I could hear on my old vinyl LP.
First off I noticed there is still no track representing the initial part of the opening title music - i.e. a slightly slower version of the main theme played in the cinema. This then leads into the "Prologue/Main Title" on th CD (called "Exploration" on the original LP). It appears a slightly larger orchestra has been used this time round because the sound is certainly fuller than that achieved by the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In fact nearly all the tracks benefit from a breadth of dynamic range not apparent previously so this leads to an overall improvement. The score has always had an epic, almost biblical, feel to it and the re-recording has conveyed this again.
On a personal note I cannot see the need to preface the Cassiopea & Starbuck section with "Sex at last", perhaps this is a reminder of the way this sequence was originally filmed (all Battlestar fans will know what I mean) and not the toned down version finally used.
The new track "More than a father/And the people rejoiced" is a particularly poetic piece although quite short and herein lies my only complaint. Namely some tracks are too short and not sections of music that can stand on their own. Would it not have been possible for the composer to segue some pieces of the score together to remove the slightly fragmented feel of the CD ? The opening title sequence referred to earlier for example would benefit from this. Similarly why not insert "Let's go home" from the original recording between "Exodus One" and "End credits"?
On the track "Red Nova" I noticed the snare drum was far less prominent than on the original recording which is unfortunate because its introduction built up the tension well for this section of the film. This use of the snare drum lends the score a military edge and is reminescent of Shostakovich in style,a feature of Stu Phillips writing for Battlestar Galactica. It's use in the main theme again lends it that military air in addition to the overall majesty of the Battlestar Galactica theme.
I look forward to Stu Phillpis' anticipated input on the Battlestar revival nad see how he develops the score.

4.0 out of 5 stars Exciting sci-fi music 24 Mar 2001
Format:Audio CD
Although not the original soundtrack this is a faithful rendation of the themes from the 3 hour pilot. The Royal Scottish National Orchestra (replacing the Los Angeles Philharmonic)conducted by the composer Stu Phillips perform excellently. The extra tracks include the prologue which opens each episode with Patrick MacNee's narration. The song is missing. Perhaps MCA will get around to issuing the LP on CD with the story LP as a bonus? A very good CD overall.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Performance shows limititations of the original 21 Sep 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
If you saw the show, you know the music and you'll automatically buy this CD as memorabilia. Stu Phillips tries to elevate his TV music to the level of a John Williams movie score by using the Scottish National Orchestra. It almost works, but not quite. These are epic-scale, grandiose performances, but they reveal the limitations of the original score, which is really meant for the small screen. Most of the memorable themes are short motifs, such as "Red and Blue," a jaunty short scale representing speeding Colonial Vipers crossing their paths in space, or the crushing "Imperious Leader" theme which rips off John Williams' Death Star motif with pounding timpanis. "Sex at Last" is a great title for the love music for Starbuck and Cassiopea, but the music is anything but torrid--it's gentle, restrained, and fairy-tale like. Of course, the main theme and end credits are glorious and benefit from the mighty horns of the SNO, but it makes me want to hear a more developed theme, because Phillips had the makings of a great symphonic concert piece. The "Theme to Battlestar Galatica" is structured in classical 3-part sonata-form: opening horn fanfare, middle formal statement with horn and strings, and resolution. It has the potential to outdo Star Wars. Maybe something to shoot for if and when the new movie comes out.

5.0 out of 5 stars An epic score in a grand tradition 5 Nov 2000
By Michael J. Mazza - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
The merits of the 70's TV series "Battlestar Galactica" have been debated by science fiction fans for over 20 years. But one issue that is beyond debate is the excellence of Stu Phillips' stirring score for the series' movie-length premiere episode. This is music in the great tradition of the space saga and its cinematic precursors.

The score has been newly recorded by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, conducted by Stu Phillips himself. This new recording pulses with energy and emotion. The mysterious prologue, the powerful main theme, the tender love theme for Cassiopea and Starbuck--each track is wonderfully realized.

Whatever flaws it had, "Battlestar Galactica" was a saga with both an epic vision and a tender heart. Stu Phillips' score expertly captures these twin aspects of the saga. This disc is an essential addition to any good collection of science fiction and fantasy film music.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good -- but a bit different 20 Dec 2003
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I have mixed feelings about this re-performed version of the original theme music from Battlestar Galactica. I consider myself a diehard fan of both the original shows and also a fan of Stu Phillips in general. Here's my thoughts on this CD.

I guess I was most dissapointed by the title track (the main theme). I found it to be a slightly higher tempo than the original performance and a bit 'tinny' sounding. The rushed feeling bugged me right from the start. The missing bottom end also got me down. Well this was a rough start since I'm at the beginning of the CD. However, it gets better. I found myself really enjoying the fidelity and instrument range on the 4th track (fighter launch/zac in trouble). Definitely liked the expanded orchestra.

The overall sound quality is pretty good, so people who are in to hi-fi will not be dissapointed. Personally I found many of the tracks on the treble-ish side of things. I felt like it was lacking in the bottom end, but tweaking the settings on my stereo helped. And the increased instrument range was definitely cool.

My big gripe was I didn't like the re-performance of the Galactica theme. To me it was the most important part and while it was pretty decent, I felt it lacking the feeling of the original. For that, I am giving the CD three stars. my recommendation? I if you can, buy the orignal 4 cd release as well. Maybe Stu will have another opportunity to re-perform it again.
