Amazon.co.uk Review

When the final credits rolled on the end of Battlestar Galactica’s final season, you could be forgiven for thinking that’s your lot. Granted, there was one hell of an ending to wrap your head around, but the tale had pretty much been told. Or, as it turned out, it’d nearly been told. For Battlestar Galactica: The Plan wraps up the plot element that had never been fully addressed by the show during its run: just how did the Cylons put their dastardly scheme together in the first place.

Battlestar Galactica: The Plan sets about answering that question with the help of lots of footage from the show across its run. Skilfully weaving new events around scenes that seasoned Battlestar fans will know oh-so-well, The Plan confidently fills in some of the gaps, and further fleshes out the Cylons are three-dimensional foes of extreme danger.

Is it a satisfying TV movie that comes out of the end of it? Just about, yes. It’s hard to argue that The Plan is entirely necessary, as all it adds is a little bit of gravy over the top of the main dish if anything. But it’s still a fun, clever addition to the Battlestar Galactica universe, and satisfyingly digs more and more into the plans of the Cylons that kickstarted the whole series off. --Jon Foster

DVD Description

The Cylons began as humanity's robot servants. They rebelled and evolved and now they look like us. Their plan is simple: destroy the race that enslaved them. But when their devastating attack leaves human survivors, the Cylons have to improvise. Battlestar Galactica: The Plan tells the story of two powerful Cylon leaders, working separately, and their determination to finish the task.

Special Features:

I really don't know why this has had some negative reviews. It is a great movie and most definitely fills in some of the lacunae of the series. People have complained that it contains clips from the series, but these are both entirely appropriate to this movie and so well integrated that it's hard to see the joins - and there really isn't that much repeat material. For me a quote from Eddy Olmos (who directed the movie) in one of the special features says it all. He notes that once you watched The Plan you'll want to rewatch the series and will get new nuances from it that you didn't see before. he's so right. The "Plan" isn't any kind of earth shattering secret that we haven't already worked out - but that's not the point of the movie. Instead it explains why the Cylons changed in the way they did and adds some extra dimensions to them that weren't revealed in the series. I thoroughly recommend this DVD.

The Plan. Basically anyone pondering buying this needs to ask themselves two questions;
1 - Am I a BSG fan who watched the show for the story?
2 - Have I seen this already?

If you answered yes, then no, then you need to see this.

The "Plan" of the title was never ever meant to refer to the attack on the 12 Colonies, so berating this for not being something it was not supposed to be is a tad unfair of other reviewers. Rather, the "Plan" is the total plan the Cylons had - notice that, "had" - for dealing with humanity that they hatched in their long years of disappearance.

Yes, this does reuse footage from the show, but it does so to put it into new context.

Quality wise, the usual mixed bag thanks to the style the show was filmed in, but still noticeably better than the DVD version and better quality than the broadcast.

Centering around the two #1 models, as one stays with the fleet and the other with the resistance, following them until their eventual discovery and capture, there are some standout moments which flesh out the Cylons and their motives, reasonings, in the same way that the episode of the series did which focused on 7 and Sharon models.

Ultimately, the final minute of The Plan is what you are watching this for. Two people holding hands has never conveyed so much in a sf show as here....

I purchased The Plan with some trepidation, having read some of the more negative reviews emphasising the re-run footage/fan exploitation aspect of the release. I was relieved to find that this couldn't be further from the truth.

Rest assured that the script, direction and acting in this production are every bit as high in quality as the mainstream series. The early destruction of the colonies scenes are jaw dropping. The re-run footage used is actually brief and minimal, and is only utilised to show how seamlessly the plot of this story marries with the mainstream series, and of course to set a time frame for the events of 'The Plan' in relation to the main story.

The Plan is an excellent stand alone product, adding a fascinating new dimension to the Battlestar story arc; it is not simply a montage of old footage made to exploit completists. Furthermore, Edward James Olmos (Adama) seems to have hit his stride as a director with this one, which doesn't suffer from the pace problems which marred a couple of the main series episodes he directed.

Battlestar newcomers should definitely start with the mini series, and then go straight to season 1; 'The Plan' is spoiler-tastic if you have yet to see season four and five. For exisiting fans of the series, who have seen the final season, 'The Plan' is an absolute treat, essential to your understanding of the story as a whole, and not to be missed.

Well worth a watch as it gives a Cylon look on things. The only thing I must say is that the BluRay is rubbish and I wish i'd spent my money on a normal dvd. Read more

A bit mixed up
A decent enough watch but it was a bit cobbled together in a sense. Would have been more interesting if there was a second instalment as it doesn't follow the story to a conclusion
