Product Description

Even though creator Ron Moore worked on multiple STAR TREK series, sci-fi fans expecting the millennial re-imagining of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA to have a similarly sunny outlook on the future didn’t know what they were in for. There’s no Federation here; in fact, humans are alone, and after a genocidal attack by robots called Cylons, there aren’t even that many of them left. The expectations of the original series’ fans were also subverted by a key casting change: the rogue pilot Starbuck, originally played by Dirk Benedict, would now be a woman (Katee Sackhoff), but she would lose none of her predecessor’s bravado. The smart casting also extended to the series leads: Oscar nominee Edward James Olmos stars as the military leader of the human fleet, while the acclaimed actress Mary McDonnell plays the civilian president. As the human survivors try to battle the Cylons, who are led by the sexy Six (former model Tricia Helfer), they are also in search of Earth, which may or not be a myth. Though the story of robots rebelling against their human creators has been told before, it rarely has as much grit, grime, and grace as it does with BATTLESTAR GALACTICA. This collection includes every episode from the entire epic series.

BSG is a great show which I have watched through many times, first on DVD and now finally on Bluray - so how does this Bluray box set compare? Well the picture is absolutely beautiful and really enhances your viewing experience of this already mesmerising show. The sound too is excellent.

If you haven't seen the show you really must, and if you're not a fan of Sci-Fi, don't be put off; this is a dark, gritty and daring show that deals with many controversial themes, particularly when you think back to when this was made. With story lines revolving around God, religion, genocide and the survival of the human race, and involving suicide bombings, prophecies and visions it could be considered to be quite controversial. The writing is excellent. The casting and acting is first rate throughout with (although Star Buck annoyed me), and the set design and production values are all top dollar. In fact, it's hard to fault anything about the show.

The extras on the box set too are good, although some things have been missed and it could have been better. I would ave liked to have seen the inclusion of The Plan in the box set and as far as the extras go, although there are some nice additions they are some glaring missed opportunities.

Firstly, one of the most enjoyable things about the show are the R&D indents at the end, and although there was a compilation on one of the discs of all the ones from seasons 1 & 2, a compilation of seasons' 3, 4 and 4.5 were missing. Also, the inclusion of Battlestar blips (little tit-bits of information about characters and back story which popped up on screen) was pointless as they added nothing and it was clear no effort or thought had been put into them, as they merely repeated what you'd just seen on screen 3 seconds earlier.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice, but not complete... 5 Aug 2012
Format:Blu-ray|Amazon Verified Purchase
A nice box set, but really should have also contained "The Plan" for it to be complete. It does however, include the Razor movie, and that is a definite bonus. There is also a booklet contained within the boxset that potentially contains spoilers in terms of revealing who some of the Cylon's may be, so for those buying this boxset with the intention of viewing it for the first time, or for watching it with others that haven't seen it, then don't read the booklet.

As regards the disks themselves, they are not going to blow you out of the water with the quality of their blu-ray definition, because of the way some of the footage was originally filmed to give it a a slightly grainy, "embedded reporter" type feeling to it. Indeed if you already have the DVD's of BSG, then I wouldn't bother investing in this box set, as you will gain no significant picture improvements.

The additional content, some unedited episodes and commentaries available in the set are nice to have, but I am sure that many people will just be buying this box set to have BSG in all its glory, in as few disks as possible.

In short, buy this if you don't already have the DVD's and you don't mind having to buy 'The Plan', separately.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great box set! 21 Nov 2011
Format:Blu-ray
There have been several Battlestar Galactica (BSG) blu-ray and dvd releases and this is by far the best packaging based on the price. It's well put together, enough effort has been made with the box and packaging that it looks great and stands proudly on the shelf. Playback, the company that releases BSG in the UK have taken much critisim over the years for their BSG box sets, in the UK and North America. However having researched this extensively and waited patiently to buy BSG, I have been very impressed by this box set and consider it well worth the price here.

The content included is all the great episodes in great HD video quality and sound.

Despite other reviews on this page ALL the extras are here, on the BLU RAY anyway, don't know about the DVD. That means: Extended episodes of Pegasus, Razor, Unfinished Business etc are included along with the original broadcast shorter versions. Plus webisodes, commentaries, video diaries. Confusion has come because there have been many editions of the complete BSG which did not have all the extras actually made for the show, but this one has EVERYTHING!

There are so many views on the actual show, I'll leave those for other reviewers. In my opinion, it's a rare, epic piece of TV that combines some sweeping and grand themes of politics, religion, war and culture. But anyway, I'll focus here on what my position was, i.e. someone who had the DVDs (and gave them to a friend before getting this set, lucky him, huh?) and wanted to upgrade to the Blu-ray to have one of my favourite TV series in high definition for all time (or as long as the packaging lasts, but I'll get that). Is it worth the upgrade? In spite of the odd packaging choice, I'd say yes. I've watched all the material before upscaled to 1080p, and even with the specific production choices for Battlestar, there's still a clear picture quality improvement and a real increased sense of immersion. There are too many scenes with digital noise (and I don't feel they are essential to capture the gritty feeling, but anyway) but still it's a solid, noticeable upgrade. I felt closer to the action and some of the stylistic subtleties (like the quick pull focus on characters to increase the documentary feel) finally paid-off, as I'd missed something so slight via the fuzziness of DVD. Now to the audio, it's Master Audio and it's very, very good. The dialogue clarity has always been a bit of a problem with Battlestar, but here it's better than the DVD. Everyone is talking in low voices and quietly most of the time though, so you may find yourself listening at high volumes then suddenly having ringing ears as the thundering (and extremely well done, especially for a TV show) SFX kick in all around the surround sound field....
