Product Description

Product Description

The battleship Yamato was a tremendous achievement for the Imperial Japanese Navy. With the greatest displacement, biggest guns and heaviest armour of all time, Yamato and her sister Musashi were the ultimate battleships. Everything about them was gigantic -- for example, each main-armament turret had a total revolving weight of over 2500 tons -- and they proved very dangerous opponents to the US Pacific Fleet. Fittingly for such a subject as Yamato, this contribution to the 'Anatomy' series has twice as many drawings as a standard volume in the series. The 'Anatomy of the Ship' series aims to provide the finest documentation of individual ships and ship types ever published. What makes the series unique is a complete set of superbly executed line drawings, both the conventional type of plan as well as explanatory views, with fully descriptive keys. These are supported by technical details and a record of the ship's service history.

About the Author

Janusz Skulski has a passion for accuracy which is brought out in this volume. Before starting work on the book he built a large model of Yamato to help him interpret the original material, including a wider range of Japanese sources, to help him produce one of the most detailed and popular volumes in the 'Anatomy' series. He is the author of The Battleship Fuso and the Heavy Cruiser Takao in the Anatomy series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A technical masterpiece, 30 Sep 2001
By A Customer
Another of the superb anatomy of the ship series. This one stands out as little was known about the Yamato even as she sank the US werent sure what they were sinking. This makes the ultra detailled drawings even more incredible. Every single detail represented in exquisite drawings right down to cutaways of the different ammunition carried. Whether youre building a model of the ship or just interested in the Yamato, this is the ultimate reference work.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Picture Paints a Thousand Words, 5 Oct 2004

This review is from: The Battleship Yamato (Anatomy of the Ship) (Hardcover)
This is a book of technical drawings detailing one of the two most powerful battleships ever built. There is relatively little text.

The Yamato was the Combined Fleet flagship during the Battle of Midway and fought in the action off Samar in the collection of battles now remembered as the Battle of Leyte Gulf. She was later sunk while on a kamikaze mission against the US fleet off Okinawa. Many of the records of her building and details were lost/destroyed as the end of the war approached but the Polish author has many contacts in Japan and has based his drawings on the best information available to date.

This is undoubtedly a book for modellers, serious historians or people who love technical drawings for their aesthetic value. I loved it, (and his other two titles in this series are even better)but it is definitely not for everyone.

This review is from: The Battleship Yamato (Anatomy of the Ship) (Hardcover)
Interested in navy history and model building this is number one in information, you have drawings of the entire ship, all details of it's exterior parts.
If you're going to build a model of the Yamato and want to superdetail it this book is a must.
I can recomend it in every aspect.
There are more books in this series and I'm gonna buy a book for next building project.
Many greetings from Sweden to all people with navy interest.
