Following the success of Transformers and G.I. Joe, Hasbro brings another of its beloved properties to the big screen, with explosive and cheerfully improbable results. The situation: Aliens splash down outside Hawaii, surrounding the islands with an impenetrable force field and wreaking havoc on the captive population. While the world outside watches helplessly, a skeleton crew of naval officers and civilians (led by Taylor Kitsch's cocky washout and Rihanna's weapons expert) must figure out a way to save the planet while being seriously outgunned. Director Peter Berg, whose previous films The Rundown and Hancock displayed a playful tweaking of genre conventions, keeps things surprisingly high and tight here, depicting military tactics and the chain of command with an honest respect, including casting actual combat veterans in pivotal supporting roles. While such a reverent approach is certainly admirable, it coexists uneasily with the inherent goofiness of the premise, particularly during the climactic scene where the heroes sit down in front of a grid and, yes, fire a missile at B7. (Note: Nobody actually gets to say "You sunk my battleship," but Liam Neeson, in an extended cameo as an admiral, sure looks like he wants to.) However, while the narrative might be missing a few pieces, Berg's film undeniably delivers the action-movie goods, staging a number of all-out combat scenes with verve and ingenuity. (Special kudos to whoever designed the main weapon of the aliens, a razor-toothed sphere of gears that chews up the scenery with a tangible sense of delight.) Audiences looking for coherence may need to keep on looking, but Battleship definitely sports the maximum number of bangs for the summer-movie buck. Bring on Kerplunk: The Motion Picture. --Andrew Wright

3.0 out of 5 stars Pearl Harbour with Aliens instead of Japs! 11 Mar 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Poor plot, weak dialogue and enept acting(Liam Neeson, what were you doing in this?).
Apart from the excellent CGIs this film was rather boring.Suitable for a young audience I suspect.
I would not recommend this for the Thinking Man.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nowhere near as bad as I expected 6 Aug 2012
Battleship is the story of the RIMPAC joint-naval exercises that are rudely interrupted by an alien invasion. The Aliens set-up some sort of force-field around the Hawaiian islands, separating the John-Paul-Jones and a couple of other ships from the main navy. It becomes clear that the aliens are trying to contact home using the satellite array on Oahu and the only thing standing between the aliens and the array are a bunch of rag-tag survivors. Can they stop this invasion?

Well, first off a lot of people have likened this to Halo and they are pretty much correct. The aliens are pretty unimaginative, they just look like any number of FPS video game characters (Halo, Crysis & Haze all have similar suits & visors) but with some dactyl-alteration. This film stars Rihanna and Taylor Kitsch (John Carter) and surprisingly, Ri-Ri is not that bad, despite only having simple response lines ("Yes Sir, right away") but there are no scenes that hinge on her emotional performance. Liam Neeson provides a decent rendition of a stern but heartfelt Naval Admiral. The story runs in two arcs: the battle between the ships (clue's in the title) and the land-based advance on the satellite facility. It's fairly linear, but the revival of the U.S. Missouri ('The Big MO') set to AC/DC's thunderstruck was awesome and some points were pretty poignant.

3.0 out of 5 stars At this price worth a punt. 6 May 2013
I must say I honestly had no I idea about the premise of this film other than the fact it's got aliens and the U.S Navy. And perhaps not knowing anything about it before hand made it more enjoyable. It's your standard sci-fi fodder albeit at sea but it works. It's not exactly deep but considering the source material it ain't too shabby. Seriously I had no idea it was based on the game of the same name until about halfway into the film, even seeing the Hasbro logo at start didn't give the game away. And perhaps that's the best way to view this film is with hour any preconceptions, I reckon if I was fully aware about the background I'd have been dismissive of it. This film does have the vibe of one of the countless WW2 navy films to it but with extra terrestrial enemies. It's not a particularly great film but surprisingly enjoyable, a good addition to anyone's collection, perfect for when there's sod all on telly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Battleship meets Halo 14 April 2012
By The Man
I saw the trailer and I didnt think it looked bad but it didnt really interest me enough to go and see it at the cinema. I was dragged along with my dad, brother and his friend and dad. I am glad I went.

As you all know, there have been MANY alien invasion-type movies being and have been released in the past year and this year, but among them stands a box office giant, and that movie is Battleship. The story is set around a naval fleet that accidentally makes contact with aliens known as "The Regent." Soon, the world is thrown into chaos as these creatures have a hidden agenda of which did not involve human presence, which is now to be dealt with in the most severe way; annihilation.

The acting all around was good. Taylor Kitsch was great, I've heard about him before but I've never actually seen any of his movies but he was great in this one. Liam Neeson, for the parts he was in, was fantastic as he always is. Rihanna wasn't as bad as I thought she was going to be and considering this is her first movie I think she did pretty well.

Peter Berg did a fantastic job directing this movie, he used a wide range of camera angles to show us everything that was going on. The sound fx and design was astounding and the soundtrack by Steve Jablonsky was superb too. All in all I think that Battleship isn't as original as something like Inception but it's still a great summer blockbuster and it's definitely worth watching on the big screen.

Where to start, first of all a digial copy it is not. You have to watch it via an MP4 format and itunes. The digital copy with the excellent film Prometheus is just that, I can watch it on my PC. Not so with the digital copy with Battleships Blueray, I cannot watch it at all, I only bought this as the film is not a bad film BUT it said it had a digital copy ( I discount UV copies as they are utter rubbish and do not work for ordinary people with ordinary PC's etc, I am not a geek in london who uses the cloud!!!)
Next I have a Sony blueray player which has had rave reivews and is very good, this film goes back to the very start when I stop it to do something else,i.e it does not say (resume play?) to watch the film from the last point. None of my many other films does this. UNIVERSAL WHAT ARE YOU PLAYING AT?
