From Amazon.co.uk

Following the success of Transformers and G.I. Joe, Hasbro brings another of its beloved properties to the big screen, with explosive and cheerfully improbable results. The situation: Aliens splash down outside Hawaii, surrounding the islands with an impenetrable force field and wreaking havoc on the captive population. While the world outside watches helplessly, a skeleton crew of naval officers and civilians (led by Taylor Kitsch's cocky washout and Rihanna's weapons expert) must figure out a way to save the planet while being seriously outgunned. Director Peter Berg, whose previous films The Rundown and Hancock displayed a playful tweaking of genre conventions, keeps things surprisingly high and tight here, depicting military tactics and the chain of command with an honest respect, including casting actual combat veterans in pivotal supporting roles. While such a reverent approach is certainly admirable, it coexists uneasily with the inherent goofiness of the premise, particularly during the climactic scene where the heroes sit down in front of a grid and, yes, fire a missile at B7. (Note: Nobody actually gets to say "You sunk my battleship," but Liam Neeson, in an extended cameo as an admiral, sure looks like he wants to.) However, while the narrative might be missing a few pieces, Berg's film undeniably delivers the action-movie goods, staging a number of all-out combat scenes with verve and ingenuity. (Special kudos to whoever designed the main weapon of the aliens, a razor-toothed sphere of gears that chews up the scenery with a tangible sense of delight.) Audiences looking for coherence may need to keep on looking, but Battleship definitely sports the maximum number of bangs for the summer-movie buck. Bring on Kerplunk: The Motion Picture. --Andrew Wright

Product Description

Peter Berg (Hancock) produces and directs Battleship, an epic-scaled action-adventure that unfolds across the seas, in the skies and over land as our planet fights for survival against a superior force.

Inspired by Hasbro’s classic naval combat game, Battleship stars Taylor Kitsch as Lt. Alex Hopper, a Naval officer assigned to the USS John Paul Jones; Brooklyn Decker as Sam Shane, a physical therapist and Hopper’s fiancée; Alexander Skarsgård as Hopper’s older brother, Stone, Commanding Officer of the USS Sampson; Rihanna as Petty Officer Raikes, Hopper’s crewmate and a weapons specialist on the USS John Paul Jones; and international superstar Liam Neeson as Hopper and Stone’s superior (and Sam’s father), Admiral Shane.

Berg directs this epic action-adventure also produced by Scott Stuber (Couples Retreat), Sarah Aubrey (The Kingdom), Brian Goldner and Bennett Schneir of Hasbro (the Transformers franchise), along with Duncan Henderson (Master and Commander) and Jeffrey Silver (300). The film is written by Jon Hoeber & Erich Hoeber (Red).

The battle for Earth begins at sea.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nowhere near as bad as I expected 6 Aug 2012
By J. Morris TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Blu-ray
Battleship is the story of the RIMPAC joint-naval exercises that are rudely interrupted by an alien invasion. The Aliens set-up some sort of force-field around the Hawaiian islands, separating the John-Paul-Jones and a couple of other ships from the main navy. It becomes clear that the aliens are trying to contact home using the satellite array on Oahu and the only thing standing between the aliens and the array are a bunch of rag-tag survivors. Can they stop this invasion?

Well, first off a lot of people have likened this to Halo and they are pretty much correct. The aliens are pretty unimaginative, they just look like any number of FPS video game characters (Halo, Crysis & Haze all have similar suits & visors) but with some dactyl-alteration. This film stars Rihanna and Taylor Kitsch (John Carter) and surprisingly, Ri-Ri is not that bad, despite only having simple response lines ("Yes Sir, right away") but there are no scenes that hinge on her emotional performance. Liam Neeson provides a decent rendition of a stern but heartfelt Naval Admiral. The story runs in two arcs: the battle between the ships (clue's in the title) and the land-based advance on the satellite facility. It's fairly linear, but the revival of the U.S. Missouri ('The Big MO') set to AC/DC's thunderstruck was awesome and some points were pretty poignant.

Extra content: includes featurettes "Preparing for Battle", "All Hands on Deck: The Cast", and a 2-part Engage at Battle feature "Shooting at Sea", "All Aboard the Fleet". The Blu-ray includes an alternate ending with commentary by Peter Berg and a digital copy of the film - with Ultraviolet codings (UV is a digital locker for your media, you have to register an account and upload your unique product code, but then you can stream it or download it anywhere on the planet on any medium).

The CGI holds up well, even on large-scale alien ships & technology and, despite the dubious use of tsunami buoys (with a name like battleship they had to get a grid system in somewhere...) this is an entertaining film that is great for a wet afternoon. Recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars Battleship meets Halo 14 April 2012
By The Man
Format:DVD
I saw the trailer and I didnt think it looked bad but it didnt really interest me enough to go and see it at the cinema. I was dragged along with my dad, brother and his friend and dad. I am glad I went.

As you all know, there have been MANY alien invasion-type movies being and have been released in the past year and this year, but among them stands a box office giant, and that movie is Battleship. The story is set around a naval fleet that accidentally makes contact with aliens known as "The Regent." Soon, the world is thrown into chaos as these creatures have a hidden agenda of which did not involve human presence, which is now to be dealt with in the most severe way; annihilation.

The acting all around was good. Taylor Kitsch was great, I've heard about him before but I've never actually seen any of his movies but he was great in this one. Liam Neeson, for the parts he was in, was fantastic as he always is. Rihanna wasn't as bad as I thought she was going to be and considering this is her first movie I think she did pretty well.

Peter Berg did a fantastic job directing this movie, he used a wide range of camera angles to show us everything that was going on. The sound fx and design was astounding and the soundtrack by Steve Jablonsky was superb too. All in all I think that Battleship isn't as original as something like Inception but it's still a great summer blockbuster and it's definitely worth watching on the big screen.

1.0 out of 5 stars TOTAL EXCREMENT 10 Jan 2013
Format:DVD
Liam Neeson was the best thing in it. Shoot em up fun all in all bright and colourful etc but the acting is awful. Leads are weak and I mean totally weak even wooden. I took nearly 4 hours to watch this as I had to bury my head between my knees and rock in a corner a few times. Only watched because I paid money to rent it. I can't believe that this film is so well received.
