Book Description

Children's voices ring out from the school playground; in the distance there is the gentle hum of a lawnmower; and all around the village, birdsong can be heard. But despite all evidence to the contrary, in the village of Thrush Green feelings are running high...

The rector has a plan for the neglected churchyard which doesn't meet with universal approval; there is a clash of personalities at the local school; and someone has returned to the village after an absence of fifty years.

Before long, the tranquillity of the Cotswold village is shattered.

    About the Author

Miss Read, in real life Dora Saint, was a teacher by profession who started writing after the Second World War, beginning with light essays written for Punch and other journals. She then wrote on educational and country matters and worked as a scriptwriter for the BBC. Miss Read was married to a schoolmaster for sixty-four years until his death in 2004, and they had one daughter. Miss Read was awarded an MBE in the 1998 New Year Honours list for her services to literature. She was the author of many immensely popular books, including two autobiographical works, but it was her novels of English rural life for which she was best known. The first of these, Village School, was published in 1955, and Miss Read continued to write about the fictional villages of Fairacre and Thrush Green for many years. She lived near Newbury in Berkshire until her death in 2012.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much loved "friend" 14 July 2009
    Format:Paperback
I have enjoyed reading and re-reading Miss Read's books for many years. My old copies are gradually becoming "loose leaf". I am beginning to replace some and buy others which I have never owned. A really relaxing escape into a slower, gentler pace of life.

5.0 out of 5 stars English Village Life 14 Jan. 2013
    Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is one of a series of books by Miss Read on A fictional village and its inhabitants. They are all keenly observed and remind me not only of the village I grew up in but I also relate her characters to those in my village today. All her novels are gentle and nostalgic for a way of English life which is fast disappearing. She even captures the terrible gossip and rumours that abound which is the real downside of country living and makes it amusing. Her books are also gentle in a tough world.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is how vilage life was 4 Jun. 2011
    Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A great way to learn about the gentler side of life during the 60's, a village in middle England, just getting on with life and all its trials and tribulations, written at the time it was taking place, it was a normal everyday life but read now, its a great insight to a slower pace of life which regrettably has gone for ever, but it makes a great read. It should be read in conjunction with other Miss Read books, you get a feel for the characters and the period.

5.0 out of 5 stars Light easy read 2 Mar. 2015
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have read and re read all of Miss Reads books in paperback and on kindle and this is no exception to the easy reading of her books. I always enjoy the meeting up of these characters as they face the ups and downs of village life. Miss Reads observations about the countryside are so refreshing and her eye for human foibles as sharp as ever in this book. A light easy read.
