Review

"A powerful pick... It comes packed with action shots and photos, first-hand accounts from soldiers on both sides - most of which have never appeared in English - and follows the months between the arrival of the Red Army in Germany to the collapse of Hitler's regime. No military collection strong in World War II should be without this specific, in-depth analysis." - The Midwest Book Review (December 2010)

."..[a] marvelously written and illustrated new work with excellent maps on a series of battles too long overlooked ... deserves to be read by any true devotee of World War II." -"Military Advisor "(Winter 2010/2011)

Product Description

In September 1944 the Soviet Army poured into German territory, flooding the martial heartland of the Reich, Prussia. Hopelessly outnumbered by the human wave of the Red Army, the Wehrmacht fought on with determination, but was gradually beaten back. This book describes the great battles that marked the Soviet conquest of Prussia, from Memel to Konigsberg, the Heiligenbeil Pocket to Danzig. Using accounts never before published in English, Prit Buttar looks at the campaign both from a command level, and from the perspective of normal soldiers on the front line.

For any who find the final period of the war fascinating, this is the book for you. Chock full of stories from soldiers, civilians and navy men - from both sides - Battleground Prussia shows how the Germans put up stubborn resistance against the Soviets as they crept onto German soil. Although the first 150 pages are a bit slow, as if the author was getting used to writing his first book, which it is, the last 300 pages more than make up for it, as the reader marvels at the achievements of the Kriegsmarine, during the evacuations from Memel, Hela and Windau. In short this is a worthy book, as it documents a period not normally covered in more general histories of the war. The film Joy Division [DVD] [2006] also covers the German flight from the east, and may prove an interesting companion to this book for the historically aware.

Battleground Prussia 14 Oct 2010

Format:Hardcover
This is an excellent book covering the final debacle of the wermacht in the east,
. Very little has been written in English concerning this tragic and complicated series of battles in Prussia in 1945. The author succeeds in combining miltary fact with human experience and in making a very readable book. For anyone interested in completing a thorough knowledge on the Nazi-Soviet conflict , this is a must.

There is much more to the Eastern Front in 1945 than 'just' the fall of Berlin as this excellent new study shows.

The battles for East and West Prussia and the 'Baltic balcony' were particularly ferocious as a wealth of first-hand accounts - from soldiers and civilians - testify. The author has done considerable service both for serious military historians, interested in the movements of armies, and the lay historian, interested in the human element of war. Particularly useful if you read it alongside Noble's study on the Eastern Front in 1945: Nazi Rule and the Soviet Offensive in Eastern Germany, 1944-1945: The Darkest Hour

A must for anyone interested in the Eastern Front and the 'Endkampf' in particular. The best Ostfront book I've picked up since Mike Jones' The Retreat.

Bought as a present. The receipiant found the text very focused & to the point. Very useful. The maps could do with being a little larger to show some really revivant detail.
