More About the Author

Tonie Holt is the 'Major' of Major and Mrs Holt who are well known as the authors of the leading guide books to the battlefields of the First and Second World Wars.
Both he and Valmai(the 'Mrs') began writing at their schools. Their first published works were for local newspapers and then for commercial radio.
They founded the company Major and Mrs Holt's Battlefield Tours in the early 1970s at which time it was the first and only company running such tours for the general public eventually covering wars as far afield as Viet Nam, the Crimea, South Africa, El Alamein, the American Civil War and of course the battles of both the First and Second World Wars.
In the 1980s they were asked to take over running the Pilgrimage programme for the Royal British Legion which they completely upgraded and then handed back to the Legion when the British Government re-instated the financial support for relatives to visit the graves of loved ones.
Having sold the company in the 1990s Tonie and Valmai began writing the series of guide books which is now accepted as the leader amongst such publications. Unlike many authors they do not have a team of researchers but do all their own research by travelling all the routes they recommend, visiting all the memorials and cemeteries and taking all the photographs.

Product Description

From the Publisher

A travellers Guide
Mons, Ypres, Passchendaele, Vimy Ridge, the Somme....The names are no less poignant three quarters of a century on, and the emotional pull of the physical reminders of the First World War is undiminished.

This fascinating book provides detailed accounts of the fifteen most significant battles of the First World War and the events that preceeded them. Aided by maps and quotations, it may be read at home as a continuous guide, dipped into at any time for informartion via the index or simply kept as a reminder of past visits to the sites described.

At each historic site the Holts describe the events leading up to the battle, the aims and tactics of the commanders and the action itself. They then provide detailed directions for a manageable tour of the battlefield, taking in all the significant landmarks and reminders of what took place, from key fortifications and trench lines to scenes of crucial turning points and outstanding acts of courage.

Tonie and Valmai Holt have produced a remarkable book, which is both a practical guide for visitors to the sites as well as a moving and sensitive response to the harrowing evidence of the sadness and sacrifice, the horror and the heroism of "the war to end all wars". --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Format: Hardcover
The book is written as a series of chapters each on a different campaign. Each chapter describes the campaign and then a tour that takes you round the most important sites and monuments.
I used this book as the only guide for a tour round the Somme, Vimy and Ypres battlefields and it served well. Although it led me round the principle monuments and cemetries, if you want to explore the battles in more detail, you'd need another source.
The maps and directions are adequate but you need a detailed road map of the areas as well.

Arrived on time. Well wrapped . Very good service - informative email. Good sheet inside to say to contact if there were any problems. Book was exactly as described. I particularly like the box it arrived in - Christmassy, but ideal to keep the book from being bashed. Also inside the box, the book was wrapped in a plastic bag too - which shows care from the bookseller. As I say - impressed by the service of the bookseller - just hope it is enjoyed as a present by my Mum now!!!d

2nd hand book, but not a problem - good condition. I was traveling in N France & Belgium and wanted to know where to go to visit some good WW1 sites. This book highlights some imortant memorials and battlefields, giving a good description and directions. Obviously an old book so some road numbers etc have changed, but used with a current map it is no problem.

Interesting to read up on the places we visited and educational for the kids ......... whether they liked it or not!!
