Product Description

Product Description

Part of the documentary series looking at the most significant battles of the Second World War. This volume traces the course of the savage fighting in the Balkans in the latter half of the conflict. After the uprising by the Romanians against their fascist leader Antonescu, the Soviet army moved swiftly to capture Bucharest and the vital Ploesti oilfields. With Bulgaria and Hungary swiftly falling to the Soviets, the Germans launched a grim defensive campaign in Yugoslavia, with violent retribution met out against the partisan groups who had resisted them. Includes informative graphics of the weaponry used by both sides, as well as rare archive footage.

I bought this DVD to get an in depth presentation of the German assault on Yugoslavia and Greece and how the conflict arose and evolved. I also anticipated to get informed about the complex relations between the numerous guerillas and resistance movements in Yugoslavia during the war. Finally I expected information about how the war ended and how Titos partisans finally won the civil war that followed and seized power. Similar information about the civil war in Greece was not expected but would have been appreciated.

I was deeply disapointed as none or little of this was covered. The DVD gives general information about Germanys war on all fronts, roghly 20% of the DVD covers events in the Balkans, but much of that "Balkan coverage" covers the Ploesti oil fields in Romania and the allied air strikes against it. Soviet war crimes during the liberation of Romania and Yugoslavia are not mentioned at all.

There is actually more information about the campaign in the Balkans in the DVD "The Third Reich in Colour" also avaliable from Amazon, than in this documentary which actually bears the name: Campaign in the Balkans. Selling this DVD under the name "Campaign in the Balkans" is nothing short of deception.

Production is of low class in virtually all aspects and appear to have been made in a haste.

I cannot recommend purchase of this product.
