5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 16 Jun 2007

I thoroughly enjoyed this DVD via DVD rentals. It was incredibly well made and very informative and educational. Although, being a documentary and excempt from classification, it really would be suitable for any age. This DVD showed a very brutal time in British history and conveyed the sense of bloodshed well, but it did so without showing any gore or real violence. I would thoroughly recommend this title to anyone wanting to learn more about Boudicca's revolt.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Peasants are Revolting Caesar! 25 July 2009
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Boudicca`s famous revolt against the Roman Empire is brought to life by a highly informative & entertaining programme featuring live actors & impressive CGI of enormous battle scenes. Father & Son team, Dan & Peter Snow, show us how the seeds of revolt were sown, to Boudicca`s defeat by the Roman Army. Because not very much historical fact is known about her, the programme concentrates on the consequences & conclusion of the revolt rather than as a short social history of the Britons. The final, bloody stand-off between the 2 armies is wonderfully staged & presented, as we see the enormous, seething mass of Boudicca`s force hurl themselves against the shield wall of a Roman Army outnumbered 10 to 1. Likened by one historian as a "relentless chainsaw", the disciplined Roman Legions hacked their way to victory & Boudicca committed suicide. Although not very long, Boudicca`s Revolt entertains, informs & breathes life into a period of history when the "plucky Brits" took on the world`s greatest Super Power & lost.

4.0 out of 5 stars Satisfied customer 13 Jun 2010

Almost the entire story of the Boudiccan Revolt is known only from an epic Roman poem, which also carries a certain amount of propaganda. No male leaders are ever mentioned so the Romans could present the whole story as a pointless revolt "led by a stupid woman". Also left unanswered is why did the Boudiccan mob move to London rather than immediately move to Wales to deal with the Roman army on campaign there against the Druids. That time gap proved decisive as it gave the Romans time to regroup.

I also wonder how many of the ordinary legionnares were on their last campaign in Wales and about to retire to Camulodunum felt when the news reaches them that their wives and children had been slaughtered by Boudiccas followers.

The site of the final battle has always been a matter of conjecture but this reconstruction gives a very plausible suggestion, the right place and distance etc.

The only part of the final battle that I had difficulty with was the movement of the legions. Moving forward in the dense wedges shown would make it difficult to relieve any tired men in the front line. A hollow wedge, say four men deep, would make the whole unit more flexible.

Despite these criticisms, the DVD is a very credible reconstruction of the whole event and the more important people involved using some superb electronics.
