I first discovered the STEN series in 1989, when I grabbed a copy of the fifth book, FLEET OF THE DAMNED. I'd previously read Bunch & Cole's Pulitzer-nominated Vietnam war novel, A RECKONING FOR KINGS, and was surprised and delighted to see them doing a military science fiction series too. I liked FLEET OF THE DAMNED so much I went right out and bought REVENGE OF THE DAMNED, and then of course I had to go back and work forward again from the beginning.
Well, it's 2011. And my old Del Rey copies of the STEN books are more than a little shopworn. I've re-read them that much. So I was thrilled to see this omnibus edition released. I hope so much that Orbit follows through and releases the rest of the books in kind, because STEN is a truly marvelous classic of the Military Science Fiction genre.
BATTLECRY contains the first three volumes in the series: STEN, THE WOLF WORLDS, and THE COURT OF A THOUSAND SUNS. These books are action-packed, visceral, and loaded with deliciously salted language that excellently puts the reader into the thick of the fight; and the universe that Bunch & Cole created. As a character, Sten is easy to grasp and easy to root for, as are his eventual accomplices Bet, Alex Kilgour, Ida, and his boss Ian Mahoney. Richly drawn, all of them are irreverent, sometimes irascible, but very real too. After over 20 years I still find these characters, and these books, some of the best I've ever read.
I've got a copy of BATTLECRY sitting on my desk next to me as I write this. It's a lovely homage volume to the best work of Bunch & Cole. Quality paper, good cover, and best of all, it lets me read the series (again) as if it's brand new, all over. Thanks so much, Orbit books!
