Product Description

Book Description

An omnibus edition of the first three books in this fast-paced military SF series, full of action, adventure and intrigue, from the undisputed masters of military SF.

Product Description

Vulcan is a factory planet, centuries old, Company run, ugly as sin, and unfeeling as death. Vulcan breeds just two types of native - complacent or tough. Sten is tough. When his family is killed in a mysterious accident, Sten rebels, harassing the Company from the metal world's endless mazelike warrens. It's a fool's errand, of course - no man can stand against the might of the Company and expect to live. But Sten isn't just any man. From the corrupt and brutal factories of Vulcan to the plots and intrigues of the Imperial Court, the galaxy is about to come face-to-face with the ultimate warrior. Sten's already learned how to survive - now he wants more; he wants control of his own destiny. And he'll do whatever it takes to get it. No compromise, no retreat, no surrender. Only Sten. This omnibus edition contains: STEN, THE WOLF WORLDS and THE COURT OF A THOUSAND SUNS.

This Omnibus is the first three novels featuring Sten a young "Mig" ( migrant slave labour ) and his adventures serving the Eternal Emperor - a Lazarus Long type figure who's source of power is a powerful fuel called Anti-Matter Two (AM2). It is what fuels the star ships that link the Empire and the known universe.
I first read these back in the 1980's and was pleased to see these titles on kindle - very much in the vein of classic 1950's Heinlein and well worth read especially as the first three novels are in this omnibus and thus gives good value for money. However if like me you get hooked all over again do beware as the fifth in the series "Revenge of the Damned" appears to be missing for the kindle download site and looks to be out of print!

I first discovered the STEN series in 1989, when I grabbed a copy of the fifth book, FLEET OF THE DAMNED. I'd previously read Bunch & Cole's Pulitzer-nominated Vietnam war novel, A RECKONING FOR KINGS, and was surprised and delighted to see them doing a military science fiction series too. I liked FLEET OF THE DAMNED so much I went right out and bought REVENGE OF THE DAMNED, and then of course I had to go back and work forward again from the beginning.

Well, it's 2011. And my old Del Rey copies of the STEN books are more than a little shopworn. I've re-read them that much. So I was thrilled to see this omnibus edition released. I hope so much that Orbit follows through and releases the rest of the books in kind, because STEN is a truly marvelous classic of the Military Science Fiction genre.

BATTLECRY contains the first three volumes in the series: STEN, THE WOLF WORLDS, and THE COURT OF A THOUSAND SUNS. These books are action-packed, visceral, and loaded with deliciously salted language that excellently puts the reader into the thick of the fight; and the universe that Bunch & Cole created. As a character, Sten is easy to grasp and easy to root for, as are his eventual accomplices Bet, Alex Kilgour, Ida, and his boss Ian Mahoney. Richly drawn, all of them are irreverent, sometimes irascible, but very real too. After over 20 years I still find these characters, and these books, some of the best I've ever read.

I've got a copy of BATTLECRY sitting on my desk next to me as I write this. It's a lovely homage volume to the best work of Bunch & Cole. Quality paper, good cover, and best of all, it lets me read the series (again) as if it's brand new, all over. Thanks so much, Orbit books!

A ripping yarn 9 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
It's a decent fast-paced action story - read on that basis and you'll probably enjoy it. The one spoiler is the secondary character Alex who has what is supposed to be a Scots accent. It vaguely resembles some sort of mangled Doric and I found it unreadable several times and it's all through the book and I'm Scots and read Burns and Hugh McDiarmid.
