Product Description

The Clans: a civilization that worships war. Soldiers altered in body and mind. Men and women bent to the blade. They slash through space, cutting through their enemies like a laser cuts through flesh.

No one can stand against them.

Star Commander Richard Bekker of Clan Ghost Bear is smart, tough, and ruthless—the perfect Clan warrior. Victory is all he has ever known.

That’s about to change.

Because he’s going to face an enemy unlike any he’s ever seen—unlike any ANYONE’S ever seen. And if he is going to triumph, if he’s going to SURVIVE, he will have to reach inside, past his Clan training, and find the part of himself that is human.

Steven Mohan, Jr. has professionally published more a half million words of military science fiction including the BattleTech novel A BONFIRE OF WORLDS. He has sold original fiction to markets as diverse as INTERZONE, POLYPHONY, and PARADOX, as well as several DAW original anthologies. His short stories have won honorable mention in THE YEAR'S BEST SCIENCE FICTION and THE YEAR'S BEST FANTASY AND HORROR and he has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize.

A good introduction or re-entry point to the Battletech Universe. Not your typical Mech intense story. Much more grounded and personal. Simply a great read.

1.0 out of 5 stars Part One of Three - A slow build up 15 May 2012

The entirety of Part one of 'Ghost Bear's Lament' takes place on a clan dropship and is told from the point of view of Star Commander Richard Bekker. Bekker learns the harsh lesson that the practice of mercy is a double edged sword.

Part One has no mech combat and is exclusively spent on developing Bekker's character. I am looking forward to the next installment to see where the story goes from here.

Edit 6/25/12

After reading Part II of this series, I would advise anyone interested in this storyline to avoid reading Ghost Bear's Lament altogether. Part II is worse than part one and I don't see any redemption for the story.

2.0 out of 5 stars not what it used to be. 25 Mar 2012

Ghost Bear is my favorite clan. I was really disappointed in this book. It was way too short and had ZERO mech on mech fighting. The quality of the story telling was far below what I grew up with as a kid reading the BattleTech novels.

2.0 out of 5 stars There is no mech combat 24 May 2012

I am happy that BT fiction is back and I understand that the ebooks will have to be published in pieces. Unfortunately, the story does not mesh with Ghost Bear Lament Part 2, but the 2 stories are only loosely related. The whole story is about an asteroid hitting a dropship and the struggle of the mechwarriors on board to survive. There is a trial of position at the beginning of the story and the loser of the trial is forced with getting the fellow members of his Trinary to safety after the asteroid hit.

I wouldn't recommend this book as it does not fill in any gaps in the history of the BT universe or offer new insights into previous characters in the BT universe. Reading about a mech unit being destroyed by a big rock in space before it can make planetfall and enter combat is not something I hope to read about again in the future fiction.

It is a really good space disaster story. Story of MechWarrior after his Drop ship his hit by cataclysm of unknown origin, (of coarse once you see the cover of this ebook you will see the reason of the disaster) right after the Warship it is attached returns from hyperspace.
IT is set DURING THE Clan Ghost Bear invasion (among other clans) of the Inner Sphere in the year 3050.

Decent as a short story I'd have liked it to be a bit longer. Will pick up the follow up stories for sure.
