Product Description

Do Or Die; Voices From Earth First!, issue 6, April 1997

What's really good about the book is it gives you a real feeling of what it was like to be there. He really paints the picture well, getting you to understand just how surreal, joyful, depressing, life-changing and plain weird campaigns (and campaigners) can be.

It's a great read and it's extremely difficult to put the book down till the end. What more could you ask from a book than a few hours of cosy reading and a dose of inspiration to go and act?

Green Anarchist, issue 47/48, March 1997

Merrick's account of his time at Newbury is about 'what it was like [not] what it meant', the camaraderie and heroism of the early days, the quirky characters and incidents (including a controversial trip to Top Of The Pops with Julian Cope, and the Dangerous Sports Society's WW1 biplane!), and the exhaustion of the last days, being evicted without anyone even there to see...

Merrick's account is a much more honest, open and important contribution to the history of the Third Battle of Newbury than any journalistic account we've so far seen.

Protest & Thrive! 27 May 2010
Format:Paperback
This is a GREAT little book.
Written by a member of the protest camps against the buliding of the Newbury bypass.
He describes in detail and with great skill, the atmosphere and the ratmosphere in which people were driven to rough it in the freezing cold against the greedheads' destruction of our ancient landscape for the sake of some more tarmac!
I particularly enjoyed the Julian Cope references (being a huge fan of his music) and the descriptions of his support and participation in some of the demo's.

Essential reading 4 May 2000
Format:Paperback
Merrick has written one of those books that could change your way of thinking forever. His account of being at the Newbury protest is laced not only with righteous anger but also a great deal of humour. His political thinking is detailed, lucid and compelling.

Lots of books make you think that the person who wrote them is very distant from you - but not this one. Merrick's voice is very clear and very real throughout the entire book. He writes about his beliefs and experiences with real passion and his commitment to changing the world for the better comes shining through every page. Not only that, but he really makes you feel as though you can make a difference too. He is firmly on the side of life, love and liberty whilst displaying a rare understanding and sympathy for those who might agree with him but be unable to act due economic or social pressures. He even manages compassion towards those whom other eco-activists might perceive as being the enemy. All in all, a wonderful and inspiring book which deserves a wide audience.
