Format:Audio CD
Overral i'm quite disappointed with this box set. I think the brand new price tag is about double what it should be for the package. The outer box and inner gatefold books are lovely quality, thick and heavy and lustrous. But it all goes a bit downhill from here really. The vinyl pressings are of poor quality and simply housed in slots attached to the inside covers of book 1. The 2 cds are actually 1 because one is blank for you to download a live show and burn yourself. The dvd content is interesting but far overstretched over 2 discs. There is no bonus content to the actual album on disc 1 so in reality you are getting the standard album across cd and 2 vinyl and a live dvd with making of commentary. All 4 discs are attached to the book inside cover with those terrible glued on sponge thingys which damage really easy and make it hard to remove or replace the discs. The two picture books unfortunately don't make up for the lack of musical content. There is some nice photography of the band mixed with band chosen imagery on good quality photo paper, but there simply isn't enough of it. Apart from the song lyrics there is little added from the band as any kind of 'extra'. Surely the choice of poster imagery could have been more interesting too? Could have been so much better.

Cost information follows so read to the end. My review refers to the Limited Box Set. I've only listened to this once (it begins poorly but picks up and usually with Placebo it takes a few listens to understand what they're doing) so my rating is based on what is contains: an album with two bonus tracks Unisex and Move on Your Eyelids (includes both versions - CD and vinyl double lp and extra tracks on vinyl too unlike the standard lp or the limited edition CD with DVD); the Angkor Wat Cambodia concert DVD + video of band in Cambodia DVD; the making of Battle for the Sun; a second CD for restricted downloadable concert recordings from the tour; two beautifully boxed books of text and images.
Now, on Amazon.com the cost of the ordinary vinyl is 30 Euros (US$43) and this limited box set is set at 154.50 Euros (US$221.50). The band's own website leads to a link for £70 GBP (79 Euros or US$113). Why is it that Amazon.de (Germany) sells this for 21.23 Euros including tax (US$30 or £19 GBP). That's what I paid. I expected to receive the standard limited edition, but the box set arrived as promised. So, perhaps this is not as limited as we expect, and there are copies they are trying to sell off. Or it's overpriced to begin with. Either way, if you have a friend who would like this, please tell them about it. It's still Amazon so you can trust them.
