This is the fourth account of the battle that I have read. It covers exactly what occurred with timelines that help understand how the battle unfolded. It gives a feeling of "being there" by using survivors' accounts interspersed in the narrative. You can almost imagine the fear the defenders must have experienced when the accounts describe how the mass of Zulus approached in total silence. A thoroughly detailed and enjoyable read.

I have been studying the Zulu war since my school days have read many books on the subject and have spent time in South Africa walking the battle field of Isandlawana and Rourkes Drift. Although I found this book interesting it did contain a serious inacuracy in that the author states that the Impi that attacked Rourkes Drift had obtained rifles from the battle at Isandlawana, in fact they had been held in reserve and did not part in that battle. Otherwise its a good read.

Having visited the sites of the battle and had the story recounted on site the detail and conclusions both politically and militarily are extremely interesting and give great insight into the follies and heroic deeds of hand to hand warfare. The popular misconception that the soldiers were mainly Welsh is laid to rest by the inclusion of all the other regimental names given.
A most interesting piece of literature.

A typical Victorian description of the battle from those who were involved - very gung ho - but not to take anything away from the undoubted bravery of all involved including the Zulus. A good read.

Historically good, with a realistic overview of all the motives for the overall Zulu War of 1879. Many had said it was an unnecessary war, but the annexation of the Transvaal changed all.

for those who are interested in popular military history this is a hihly entertaining book. The book not only gives a vrsphic account of the battle but also how it came about. I also enjoyed finding out what happened to the major players after the battle was over.
An informative book about very brave men, on both sides, and highly recommended.

Yet another close run thing. The bravery of the soldiers was well told and the decisions of the junior officers left to fight the battle explained.

This is a very well written and researched book. I would recommend it to any history student. The film Zulu is also a good back up as the individual events in the book come vividly to mind. Should be listed reading.
