Product Description

Product Description

'Battle Stone' is my story of Harold Godwinssen during the years which lead to the Norman Conquest of England in 1066.
History provides us with a fascinating tale - but that history was written by the Conquerors.

'Battle Stone' is gleaned from the chronicles and the Bayeux Tapestry - the events, the people are all there - those you might expect to find - and some you might not.

It's historical fiction - but 'Battle Stone' has been described as
" .. just that little bit different."

From the Author

After a conflict, its story is written by the victors. Even so, the 'history' in historical fiction should not be subject to convenient rearrangement - only to sceptical reinterpretation.

Most of the characters in this novel are historically recorded - as are most of the incidents. If here occasionally, they do not seem at first to strictly adhere to the chronicles and the Bayeux Tapestry, they remain representative of the people and events described there by the Conquerors. I have considered everything told us by the winners to be open to imaginative, but judged, re-examination.

In an attempt to offer answers for the many questions raised by the accepted versions, I have gratefully exploited
enigma and ambiguity.

It may not have all happened this way - but it could have - and, as you will see, it very nearly didn't happen at all.

4.0 out of 5 stars New Historical Fiction ???, 4 Jan 2009
By Skoda (U.K.) - See all my reviews
New historical fiction? Yes, I think so - it's definitely different. Whilst staying true to the ' history', the author does not baulk at making plausible leaps of imagination, apparently feeling himself licensed to do so by the consideration that the 'history' - the story we were told - was the winners' version.
It's a story of power politics 11th. century style, conflict, duty and love - and one man who finds himself trapped in their mesh and trying to be free. Harold doesn't want to be there; he repeatedly seeks a peaceful life with his wife and children, whilst events, the times and even members of his own wider family, the Godwins, get in his way.
The style is unusual, I think, somewhere between contemporary and historical - and occasionally (only occasionally) a little hard to read - but worth it - we are being given a lot of stuff quite quickly - and introduced to a major cast of characters, most of whom are real historical figures. [ there's a list of the players at the beginning - where you can easily refer - although, the author introduces each one adequately in the text, I think. I like these lists - they whet the appetite - but, if you don't care for them, there's really no need to read them. ]
There are surprises, mysteries - some solved within a few pages, others book length - one not solved at all, but heavily (very heavily) clued.
I'll not comment on the ending and spoil it - other than to quote the book - 'An End .. to be continued ..' and there's a trailer for the sequel.
It's an entertaining attempt at something different.
