Product Description

This is a completely revised, expanded and updated edition of Dr Price's classic work, which was originally published by Ian Allan Publishing in 1973. Since it originally appeared over 30 years ago, Dr Price has gathered a significant amount of new research and data to expand and update the text and include revised information, more personal accounts, enhanced diagrams and illustrations. This new edition, to be published in two volumes, tells the story of the strategic Allied air offensive against Germany. With the aid of an analytic narrative text, diagrams and colour artwork, the campaign is examined from the viewpoints of the RAF, the USAAF and the Luftwaffe, with in-depth assessment of daylight and nocturnal operations, aircraft, weapons, radar and ground defence. There are also many accounts from the fighter aces and bomber crews who took part. Volume one examined the first part of the war, when, for the most part, it was the Allies on the defensive and the Germans striving for victory. This second volume discusses in detail the second half of the war, when the might of the USAAF 8th Air Force supplemented the experienced RAF Bomber Command in the skies over Nazi Germany. It covers the period from the build-up to the great Normandy landings of 6 June 1944 through the Allied advance through France and the Low Countries on to Germany itself and ultimate victory. In examining the period, the book highlights the differing tactics employed by the RAF and the USAAF and the successes and failures of the Luftwaffe during the period. Whilst aspects of the bomber offensive, particularly towards the end of the war, have become controversial, few would deny the necessity of the campaign in the ultimate defeat of Hitler's Germany. When it was first published, Battle over the Reich was regarded as a definitive account of the bomber offensive against Nazi Germany. Copies of the early editions are now much sought after by historians and collectors. This revised and enlarged edition will make a classic work available again to a new generation of historians and enthusiasts who will not fail to be impressed by the depth and detail of Dr Price's research.

Battle over the reich 31 Jan 2009
Format:Hardcover
I received this book just a couple of weeks ago and I can highly recommend it to anyone that has an interest in the air battles over Germany during WWII. It is broken down into parts, conserning many of the famous raids (1000 ship)and that of the Dambusters. It contains recitations from the combatants involved in the conflict. And numerous photos that I have not seen before.

Excellent book 17 Dec 2010
Format:Hardcover
Excellent book by Ian Allan Publishing. The moment i saw the logo when i opened the book i thought about the Luftwaffe Colours series, if this book had some information from the apparently unavailable Nachtjager volumes. I can't confirm this, since i don't have these titles, but the first volume has a plethora of information on the strategic bombing campaign from 1939 to 1943, from the first RAF attacks during daylight, to the night bombing campaign, and the entry of the USAAF into operations.
The book is well organized, it covers with detail some of the most important actions, with diagrams, maps, and overall feels like a Luftwaffe Colours title, but with much more depth. There are accounts from the British, American, German sides, overall well balanced, together with colour profiles of some of the airplanes used in some of the operations, or shown in photos. It covers also in detail the electronic warfare, the use of radar, the development of the Himmelbet radar network, IFF, electronic counter-measures, and eletronic intelligence, the Wilde Sau and Zahme Sau tactics.
The first volume gives some predominance to the night bombing offensive, which is understandable.
Anyone interested in this should also check the volume 2, which covers the daylight offensive in more detail. There are some interesting accounts that i've read earlier in "Clash of Eagles", by Martin W.Bowman, and this title is a perfect companion for these two volumes.
In short, well worth the money, and if you're interested in the topic, either from the historian or the modeller's point of view, you won't be disappointed. Highly recommended.

some 35 year old texts are not worth reprinting 25 Oct 2005
By N. Page - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
..I thought this title would be worth investigating. Frankly it is not - the treatment is disappointing to say the least - this is over-priced (!!) slim 'coffee table' tome. There is little evidence of new research & data. The 'enhanced illustrations' are mostly Tullis profiles lifted directly from the Jagdwaffe series..large photos reproduced over an entire A-4 side are blurred & indistinct...if you know nothing at all about the subject it might be worth looking at..otherwise avoid.

Nice, But Overpriced 5 Oct 2006
By 10th Legion - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Alfred Price is a leading author on the Allied bombing campaign over Germany in World War II. As such, it is always worth looking at any work on the subject that bears his name. However, I agree with an earlier reviewer that this book falls more in the category of "well presented coffee table book" than a must read for historical research. So for a reader with a more casual interest in the topic, I can recommend this book, however it is overpriced at its list price. Wait until it goes on the discount table then buy it at half price. It would be a good value then.

One of the Best Books I've Seen on the Subject 21 April 2006
By John Matlock - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This book is one of the best I've seen describing the air war in Europe. It is the second volume in the overall work. It:

Is Beautifully Illustrated, both photos and drawings Is Well Written Has Reports from German pilots as Well Discusses the Evolving Technology Covers Weapons that Came too Late.

This second volume covers the end of 1943 to the end of the war. This is when the RAF and the US 8th Air Force finally hit their stride in bombing Germany. The tonnage dropped and the increased accuracy was finally able to deliver what the air oriented generals has been promising since the beginning of the war.

The air generals had been saying that there was no magic target, no single target that would win the war. They were wrong. The magic target was fuel. By the end of the war the Germans had plenty of aircraft. But almost no fuel. Pilots were going into combat with very few hours. This was not unlike the British pilots during the Battle of Britain, but the British got better, and the Germans got worse until the end.

This book was first written in the 1970's when it was possible to talk with a lot of the German flyers who were still alive. It has been re-written to reflect later research and re-printed for this edition. It's an excellent read.
