Book Description

The saying goes that you can rest when you are dead, not so for Palose.
Killed on a mission, the battle mage is returned to life by a warlock of Ensolus for a mission: to betray his country, friends and everything that he knew. His treachery discovered, the planned destruction of one of the guardian castles is stopped by his former friend Sebastian.
In The Dark Mage, Palose finds out what life is like on the other side. Serving the warlock who resurrected him and the Dark Emperor who rules Ensolus, the battle mage finds that his power is greater than it was once was. Now he has to become an apprentice again to learn how to use his new power as a warlock, but it is hard to change from being a mere battle mage. If that isn’t enough, he becomes a part of saving the emperor’s life as his master works to create the perfect vessel to hold his power and help him cheat death as well.
As things grow more complicated, the dark mage gets drawn into plots against his master, a powerful giant and even the Dark Emperor. Caught between those who want him dead and those who want to use his new unique skills as a “Resurrection Man”; Palose fights to prove his worth. Is he something dead, or is he someone very much alive with his own goals and dreams. Using magic to find out more about his new life and as a way out of his predicament, the dark mage works to not only survive but thrive.
So that leaves Palose asking, where will his allegiance need to go before he risks dying a second death?

I was a little nervous going in - as this book is mostly from the perspective of Palose - but this is a worthy addition to the series. I really enjoyed watching Palose's accent as a warlock.

Nice look at the other side of the white wall war with the bad guys. I hope that the fall 2014 means early September. Keep the coming and I will keep reading them. It's a good read and a great escape. Thanks Mr. Wigboldy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed The opposite side of the story. 16 Jun. 2014

I don't write reviews. I either like ti or I don't. I think this is the best written book of the series. I was kept interested by seeing how the actions of Bas effected the evil realm and particularly how Palose, even though "dead" still had feelings and ambitions. Then throwing in the other people as just everyday ppl who didn't see what they were doing as evil but just life was a nice twist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Each side has it's own story 11 Jun. 2014

For me this novel in many ways brings new life to this series. Bas the super prodigy Mizard who invents new spells on the fly was getting too repetitive, and the prodigy Cheleya’s book though interesting just did not grab me. Maybe when Cheleya meet’s up with Bas’s sister in White Hall I might be a little more interested. Then again the sister of a prodigy (who is being setup of a super powerful wizard) paired with a prodigy Dragon Mage could turn me off too.

Palose’s tale to me is something that needed to be told, as it shows he is more than a caricature. He has real motivations, goals, and is not as evil as he was painted as in previous novels. Not to mention, where his path leads, and what side he ends up on in the end is still very open ended by the novels conclusion.

I also enjoyed delving deeper into the story others previous side characters like Garosh, Elzen, and Rilena.

I am hopeful this book gets a sequel or two because the coven (with shared knowledge and power) gives a lot of flexibility regarding character growth and how they can all grow in power without a being a prodigy. Not to mention Palose and his coven will eventually have to make the hard choice of staying with Ensolus or going back to the Wall Nations. It will be interesting to see if they take the easy road or the hard road.

Donald Wigboldy has the makings of an extraordinary author. It has been a great pleasure to read the Alus series, and I eagerly look forward to the next book
