Book Description

4 Jan 2011
Sebastian was just a boy when the wizards came and took him to the school of magic. Without the magical power to become a full wizard, the boy spent years training with the weapons of a soldier. He was also trained in the lesser magic of a battle mage. Considered inferior by the wizards, the poor apprentice found his days plagued by Magnus and his wizard friends. Magical pranks continued to follow his days as he trained harder and harder to prove himself. With the Dark Emperor's hordes threatening the Great Wall once more, Sebastian finds himself on an apprentice's first journey to the guardian forts of the Wall. An uncomfortable trip to Windmeer fortress is made all the more difficult as his childhood bully, the wizard Magnus tags along. When friendship blooms with Yara, a female wizard that also has Magnus' eye, will Sebastian find himself fighting more than just the Dark One's hordes?

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book 11 Oct 2012

This is the first book I've read by this author, and seems promising. Things come a bit easily for the main character, but it's a good read. I would like to see a follow up in the series with the same main character, as I feel there is room for further development in several aspects.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny 1 Nov 2013

This was the first book i'd read by Donald, and it certainly won't be the last. I purchased this book on a whim and to date is my favorite self published series i'd read on my kindle.

Bas is a battlemage, which means he can do magic but not as powerful as a wizard and lacking in stamina, More than a solider but less than a wizard.
in Battle Mage you watch as Bas gains confidence in his own abilities and grows as a battlemage, for me this book ticks all the boxes:
Well developed magic system, a hero who isn't loved by everyone, antagonistic characters, a love interest, nice battles and some twists that keep you engrossed in a Bas's story. As ingenuity triumphs over the established order, whilst he might not be the most powerful magic wielder he's definitely one to watch.

I've already read the sequel Winters Edge and can't wait for the Lost King to be released.

2.0 out of 5 stars Eurgh! 31 July 2013

Decent enough idea but fell into the usual trap when it came to the dialogue. It was simply dreadful. Horrifically stilted and so fake it made me want to tear my hair out. Good description but very weak characterisation.

I would like to start by saying that I enjoyed this book very much, it has good back story and Bas is an engaging lead character. However, this book desperately needs a good editor.
