Product Description

Korean war drama. In the midst of the Korean War, following the landing of US forces at Incheon, a small troop of Communist soldiers is ambushed and massacred by a military unit from the South. Three survivors of the attack manage to escape and flee north where they meet a crazy young woman, Yeo-il, who leads them to a tiny and remote village called Dongmakgol. However, the village is also a temporary refuge to several other visitors - two Southern soldiers, plus a US Navy pilot whose plane has crash-landed nearby. In no time at all the civil conflict is brought to the peaceful village in the form of a futile standoff that ends with the village's food store being destroyed. A temporary truce is called as the opposing forces reluctantly agree to work together to rebuild and restock the store. But as the soldiers begin to settle into the daily life of the village, their peaceful idyll comes under threat from the most unexpected quarters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Little masterpiece 16 Jun 2010
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a re-packaging of Welcome to Dongmakgol, presumably to try to mis-sell it as a war film, which it is and it isn't. You're probably looking for another Korean war epic, as was I. Cheap enough to take a punt right? Well, go for it! This is a unique comedy melodrama with a few bits of decent action to drive the narrative. Doesn't sound promising does it? But this film is just wonderful! Unique, funny, intelligent, compelling! Everthing that most Hollywood films aren't. JUST BUY IT!

4.0 out of 5 stars Re Release Warning 29 Mar 2009
By Tommy D TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
I am a great fan of Korean Cinema or more accurately South Korean Cinema, I was about to buy this on the strength of what has gone before when I decided to read the very short synopsis. Luckily I did as this is re package of Welcome to Dongmakgol Welcome to Dongmakgol [DVD](probably spelt that wrong). Which I alreday own and actually really like, it is a Korean take on the story told in The Last Valley The Last Valley [1970] [DVD]one of Michael Caines great little films set in Medieval Europe and also worth a look. This too is a great film, well acted and extremely beutifully shot. It is both warm and human and one of those where you get more from it on a subsequent viewing. There is even a smattering of humour, in subtitles with some English, this is a must see for all fans of foreign war cinema.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good, "poetic", exotic warmovie 22 April 2009
By Empe
Format:DVD
A lost valley during Korean war. Six tired men, not warriors, from 3 different armies: North Korea, South Korea and a USAAF' shotdowned pilot. A bunch of "forgotten" paesants, a little mad girl. A pause in the war. Before the abrupt return to the "normality", with the final sacrifice. Do You want to see and "atypical" warmovie ? Don't lose it.
