Book Description

Battle For Empire is the latest novel in Sam Barone’s six part series, a bronze age historical saga in the tradition of Conn Iggulden, Bernard Cornwell, and Jean Auel.

In Dawn of Empire, Eskkar the warrior and Trella the slave girl come together in a mighty struggle to survive a barbarian invasion and build mankind’s first walled city. Fifteen years have passed, and under Trella’s guidance, Akkad has become the most prosperous and powerful city in the Land Between the Rivers.

Now Eskkar and Trella face new menaces to their growing empire – an invasion from the north, the return of the hostile steppes horsemen, and their rebellious son, Sargon, who threatens to destroy everything his parents have worked so hard to create.

As Eskkar confronts his former clan in a battle that only one side can survive, Sargon, the heir to the throne, falls deeper into idleness and disrepute. In desperation, his parents banish Sargon, sending him to their warrior allies from the steppes to learn honor or die. But even as he dreams of taking power from his parents, Sargon encounters Tashanella, the beautiful and gifted daughter of the clan’s chief. She shows Sargon a different path. Suddenly thrust into battle, Sargon discovers that he must learn the way of the warrior not only to survive, but to save Tashanella’s life, and the city of Akkad.

Meanwhile Bracca, Eskkar’s companion from his wild days, risks his life to bring warning of yet another danger. The mighty Elamite Empire, the near mythical land beyond the mountains, has cast its eyes on the riches of the Land Between the Rivers. The Elamites must expand to survive, and they, too, plan to invade the Land Between the Rivers and reduce its people to slavery.

Eskkar and Trella must find a way to defeat this vastly superior force led by experienced conquerors. Eskkar’s battle skills will be tested, and Sargon becomes the reluctant warrior who holds the key to Akkad salvation and his parents’ survival.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Fourth Book in this series 5 Jan. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Few historical fiction books are written about other empires or people's other than the Roman, Saxon, Viking, Norman and Mongol empires. Here is a series about the rise of the Mesopotamian civilization, and is both exciting, well written and informative
A great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Back to his best 28 Jan. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
After the disappointment of the prequel novel, which i found a little episodic, Sam Barone returns to form with a novel which equals the best in the series. The plotting is tight throughout, and the battles are intensely realistic. Barone introduces Esskar and Trella's son and successfully takes the series into the next generation. I can't wait for the next episode.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Eskar series is wonderful. 30 Aug. 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Continuing the Eska stories in a way that captivates you the moment you start reading these books is amazing, Sam Barone is an accomplished author who is able to grasp the reader in the first few lines of his writing, as he leads you through the main book interlaced with intrigue, subterfuge , mystery and stunning fights as the story unfolds before your eyes, mixed with romance and history, I love this story and cant wait for the next book in the series.

A fitting climax to a most enjoyable triology. Sam Barone has written a believable and enduring epic of an early civilisation. My wife also enjoyed the stories after I recommended them to her.

5.0 out of 5 stars Historical fiction at its best. 22 April 2015
By sgeoff
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Another great story in this excellent series. Sam Barone knows how to bring ancient history to life with believable characters, authentic background and fine action sequences. He matches or surpasses any of the other historical novelists, and deals with a time and place (ancient Mesopotamia) which receives far less attention than ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. The quality of writing has never dropped - highly recommended for anyone interested in the ancient world. Each book is self-contained, but it's probably best to start with "Dawn of Empire" and work through the books in sequence.

Every book I have read in the series of 5 books has been brilliant. I couldn't put these books down once I had started to read them.
Sam Barone is a fantastic writer and keeps the characters strong and interesting through out the book with really exciting story lines. These books are about the warring tribes of the Steppes people who just took what they wanted from other tribes. I have sent Mr Barone a couple of E Mails to congratulate him on his work and both time he took the time to reply and thank me for reading his books. A true gentleman.
